I'm definitely not trying to stir anything up (especially on this board,) but I'm constantly reading posts on Xanadu and on Kerry, and I have to ask. What is the novelty? I find nothing remarkable about her voice or her acting (both on TV and broadway), and Xanadu was a less-than-memorable experience for me. What am I missing about her and this show? Am I the only one that's "Kerry-hating"?

Who's Kerri Butler? Is she any relation to Kerry Butler?

Hey! Now that her name is spelled correctly, maybe we can read the post?
Thanks, by the way.

Can't you PM to a poster that something is spelled incorrectly instead of going out of your way to be obnoxious? It seriously kills any sense of a community on these boards. . .

Yeah, I think that's the part I don't understand. There's no doubt that she has a pretty voice, but there's just so much hype and still a lot of work to be done, in my opinion, before she could ever measure up to it.

Posted: 8/25/08 at 5:19pmI personally love Kerry Butler and think she has been great in everything shes done, especially Shelley in Bat Boy and Penny in Hairspray, but her voice is rather different and I can understand where the haters are coming from.

Posted: 8/25/08 at 5:34pmI love her voice, too, some times more than others. But like I said, sometimes the nasal quality detracts from it.

Posted: 8/25/08 at 5:46pmI was disappointed with her solo CD and skip several of the songs b/c they do sound very, very nasally. However I love her in the Hairspray cast recording.

Posted: 8/25/08 at 6:21pmI think Kerry Butler's voice and acting style are so unique that she really only works in very specific roles. Personally I think she was fine in Xanadu- although she certainly was in over her head compared to the other best actress Tony nominees. She really can rock a role if it's right for her. Xanadu, Bat Boy, Hairspray, and Little Shop worked. However when she was recording demos as Ariel in the workshops for Mermaid? Not so much. . .

I think that YOU are a snob....
if you can't have fun at a show like XANADU, what show can you have fun at? RENT?? SPRING AWAKENING???
There's nothing to "get"
it's just a fun little musical with a fabulous cast. it's the most recent little musical that could (AVENUE Q started the trend)

Posted: 8/25/08 at 6:32pmI agree with oohshizz, I personally love Kerry too,I'm definitely one of her biggest fans haha i think what may have built "kerry love" was her performances in Bat Boy and Hairspray. She's great in everything but specifically those two. Her voice and acting and personality are so unique and to me they are very likeable qualities. I think being unique and being on broadway is a definite plus, and she's also the nicest person ever haha.

Posted: 8/25/08 at 10:18pmI loved her in Hairspray, disliked her in a lot in Little Shop but she redeemed herself in Xanadu. She has a great voice, and I think she's giving a wonderful performance in Xanadu. Plus, she was as sweet as can be at the stage door.

Thank you all for responding- I guess that's what it was- more of certain things in her voice that irritated me and I just didn't love Xanadu, overall. All the hype kind of created an objective opinion, to begin with. Sometimes, it helps knowing what a sweet person she is, on top of a halfway decent voice.
TooDarnHot, as for your comment, a snob consists of someone that has an opinion other than yours? I sincerely doubt that every single person that goes to see Xanadu has a tremendous amount of fun. I just wasn't into it- not the songs, not the show, not the actors in the show, really. Some shows are meant to just be fun, and I understand that, but that doesn't mean that everyone automatically is supposed to appreciate that and just like them. . .sometimes, they still just aren't good. Look at Cry-Baby, for instance. I know your wrap just from reading through the other boards and am more annoyed that I even feel I have to dignify your post with a response.
