Now that we're all getting our recordings and remembering how much we loved it, which part is your favorite?
...
and yet I'm having a tough time answering my own question...
I'm gonna go with Gloryday for now. I think that the music is the most powerful in this one. I mean, Mary Testa singing "there will be a miracle" just blew my mind, and the apocalyptic-jesus-rising scene, which could have been tacky to the utmost, was very moving and well written. All the actors performed best in this one. And, of course, it has the show stopper, "the greatest practical joke."
Close in second is R Shomon, because of the amazing complexity of the quartet and the stalwart "no more." And i think the different sides of the story were written and played brilliantly.
Oh yea, and i love Kesa and Morito too. go figure.
I don't have my recording. But I want to get on record my untainted (by the recording) favorites of the show. Based solely on my first impression of the score and the show itself, I liked R Shomon best. It was just more emotionally intense for me. It was both frightening and very very haunting.
I love Gloryday second. Mary Testa and Henry Stram rocked the house at their touching, and hysterical, moments. Also, Idina and Aaron Lohr moved me. Their performances were absolutely moving and their songs reflected it.
While I loved Kesa & Morito it's hard to put it above the other 2 sections of the show as it just consists of less material. While Idina and Kudisch certainly connected with this music, this was the least effective point of the score. Of course least effective only put's it at excellent as opposed to near perfect.
THERE WILL BE A MIRACLE is my favorite song.
Y'all should go out and get HELLO AGAIN. THE WILD PARTY. and MARIE CHRISTINE.
Kesa and Morito are probably my favorite songs (Ok, yeah right. There are so many brilliant songs, ask me when Kesa is no longer the song currently playing and I'll probably say a different song), but my favorite part of the show was R. Shomon. If that makes any sense.

From someone who hasn't seen it, is it worth my buying? I'm a fan of jazz and upbeat numbers. Will I be pleased with it?
It definitely has its share of jazzy numbers and upbeat ones. It's just an overall brilliant score. I'd imagine you'd enjoy or be able to appreciate it.
I would think it would confuse the pants off of you. Read a detailed synopsis first. There aren't many, so look hard. BwayGirl, it's R ShomOn, as the movie premiere was for Rashomon.

I loved Gloryday for the combination of the acting and songs,But my favorite overall song is See What I See feom R Shomon.Idina did an amazing job with that song and I acn still see her looking like a knockout in that red dress every time I think about it.And if you don't like it, You can blow, blow, blow!!!!
Right now I'm listening to Audra's SWIWS, which is amazing. I like her rendition better than Idina's and would have loved to see her in Idina's role.

Gloryday
During R. Shomon, I was saying to myself, alright, when will Act 2 be?
During Gloryday, I wanted to know what would happen next after each song.
What was that song Mary Testa has in Gloryday? It was one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard.
She had two, thes. "The Greatest Practical Joke" and "There Will Be A Miracle," but since "The Greatest Practical Joke" is comedic, I assume you're referring to the latter of the two.
itsmeee, thank you for correcting that. I knew that. I just don't think when I type, lol.
Mary Testa was simply brilliant when I saw the show. I remember fighting tears during There Will Be a Miracle. I was beyond moved.
I just got it in the mail. I must go give it a good listen or two before I establish my favorites.
going strictly from my viewing of the show back in late october, I'd say R Shomon... what a cool plot. Gloryday was very cool too. It's hard to compare since they're so different.
