More to the direct point here - whether or not this is a legit fix or not - theater prices are outrageous enough. Ten dollars will not stop those who already pay those prices, but every little bit further the divide between the wealthy who can afford to pay those prices and the rest of us who can't. Someone on here mentioned theater surviving the Depression etc. -- back then, the cost of a ticket for a show on Broadway was less than the cost of a MOVIE ticket! There is absolutely no comparison any more.
Broadway is going to price itself right out of business on its own, it hardly needs another tax on top of the already too high prices to help push it along.
This is coming from someone who used to go to NY at least a half dozen times a year to see a show (when TKTS was only 40-50 bucks a ticket) to someone who hasn't gone in to see a show in months because I can't afford to any more (the combination of transportation and tickets, not to mention the inevitable need to eat something, ends up costing me nearly 200 bucks for two of us to go - that's simply far too much).

It's just a sign of the times. Las Vegas has had a "live entertainment" tax/fee for years now. It's lame, but if you want to see any show there you have to pay it.
