King & I question

Took the grandkids to the stunning production at Lincoln Center. Now I had done this show in summer stock and had seen several of the Yul. Brynner revivals as well as the overblown version at Jones Beach.I'm sure I've seen hs and community theaters tackle the show as well. I'm pretty familiar with the text

I Don't ever recall the line about the King building a wall around Siam. Of course it comes off as a reference to the Trump. Has this been added to the show or is it something that stands out now because of our political circus?

Sher added some political dialogue that was found in earlier drafts of the libretto.

Was that added for this revival originally? Or just when the Donald Trump fiasco started happening? I saw the revival early in the run but don't remember.

The restored dialogue has been there since previews. It was discussed in early articles about the revival and some reviews.

The difference now, ljay, is that only Daniel Dae Kim has spun that line in such a way as to get a laugh. All the other kings just said the line and moved on. Kim pauses and does a kind of take, which gives the audience time to think about Trump and laugh.

Kim is marvelous in the role.

When I visited the show again last week It seemd like his voice was failing on him. Did anyone else notice that?

I saw the show this weekend (first time Mazzie and Kim) and I thought his singing was quite respectable for someone not known as a singer.
