I found this interesting and was wondering whether anyone knew of examples of this happening, or even if it is the norm, with productions in the US.
Because King Kong was initially advertised as being staged only in Melbourne (i.e., not touring anywhere else in Australia), the producers have guaranteed that if they do decide to tour elsewhere in Australia, they will fully refund the purchase price of tickets to see the Melbourne production of King Kong, the cost of return interstate travel from the ticket buyer's nearest capital city and accommodation costs incurred for the ticket buyer's stay in Melbourne.
The reason for this, apparently, is in response to the practice in the past of advertising that a show would play in only one city, luring interstate travelers, and then taking it on the road when ticket sales went well.

Most shows each week are selling out in the 2,000 seat plus Regent. In the newspaper last week N.Y. was confirmed as well as 2 European productions. Still, I'm not in a hurry to see it.

I'd rather have Spider-Man at the Foxwoods than King Kong...

That's quite the agreement they have locked themselves into. The closest thing I could compare it to is how some tours will not allow the show to be booked within a certain radius of various sit-down productions, mostly with shows avoiding southern CA when they have a separate production running in Vegas, such as Jersey Boys.
