When did this happen? I still have not seen this movie on VHS or otherwise, and it has sat in my Netflix queue for who knows how long, now 'flix is telling me it's in my Saved queue. Then I go to Amazon and, voila, fetching $30. Such frustration, and I was beginning to become re-infatuated with the score this week after the OBCR got reissued in the eco-things. (I have only ever had the Lincoln Center cast)
Don't you hate that moment when something in the back of your mind comes to the forefront and then you find it has gone out of print before you have a chance to snag it? Not since The Slipper and The Rose, I tell ya....
I'm grateful for the stuff I manage to get in time, but can't help but grieve a bit. Share your grievances?
It's still available for digital download over at iTunes ($9.99 OWN/$2.99 RENT). I just checked a second ago. This film was never released as an individual DVD but as part of an MGM Musicals Boxed set along with HIT THE DECK and some other films. That set is still available from amazon. I've provided the link below..but it'll set you back 70 bucks.

And now it's your fault I am blasting "Not Since Nineveh" from my audio speakers.
It's also avaialble from the Warner Bros. Archive as an MOD title for $20.00
No it's not. That's the Marlene Dietrich non-musical version available for $20.00
I did consider the box set, but I don't need to own half those titles. Now I feel like I should rent every older musical on Netflix before they start dropping them.
You can still rent it from iTunes. $2.99 is not bad. I got mine off of ebay and I paid $20.00 for it. It definitely came from that boxed set because it was housed in a slim case as opposed to the normal amray case a DVD usually comes in. Good thing about the DVD is that it's completely remastered, in anamorphic widescreen and 5.1 Dolby Stereo Surround and it looks and sounds great!

I'd love to see the Robert Goulet/George Chakiris TV version released on DVD.
Unfortunately all that's available of the Jose Ferrer, George Chakiris, Barbara Eden, Anna Maria Alberghetti version is a very muddy kinescope since the original color videocassette was erased and re-used. Unfortunately it's the only source available of that production. I think there is a clip of Eden performing "Not Since Nineveh" from this production posted on You Tube. She does a nice job.

And here's Jeannie as Lalume:
Barbara Eden in KISMET (1967)
CarlosAlberto: I'm a bit new to the iTunes culture but doesn't renting or owning a film from iTunes mean I can only watch it on my laptop or iPod touch? Even though the reissue is anamorphic and 5.1, I feel that scope would be lost on either of those formats. I think watching the VHS on my 20" television would be far preferable.
DollyPop: I didn't know such a thing existed. Was Goulet a decent, I'm assuming, Hajj?
The download available is the widescreen version. I downloaded it before purchasing my copy from ebay. It's the same ratio. Here is a screencap of the version I downloaded form iTunes.
I just checked: Goulet wasn't even in it. Jose Ferrer played Hajj. Chakiris was the Caliph and Alberghetti was Marsinah.
It's just so tiny, though.... Thank you, though, I'll keep it in mind but I would almost prefer to put that 9.99 towards a DVD boxset that includes Kismet.
Now that you mention Barbara Eden was in it I remember reading about this version back when. Thanks for the reminder.
@ twinbelters your picture will be bigger viewing your old VHS on your television but you won't be getting the whole picture since the VHS is a cropped pan and scan image. You will be actually seeing MORE if you download it and watch it on your laptop, just the picture will be smaller.
That picture is reduced. It would have been bigger if I had posted the actual size from my widescreen laptop.
A pan and scanned cropped VHS image will give you this more or less:
I appreciate what you're saying, truly, anamorphic is lovely and 5.1 a blessing, but the fact is the screens on which to view the iTunes download are smaller than the standard television from the 1980s. I would like to recline on my couch with a glass of wine and view the movie with some distance, and without headphones, on some decent-ish speakers. You're a dear, Carlos, thanks for your insight.
Oh I completely understand. You're actually better picking one up from one of amazon's marketplace sellers. It will definitely be cheaper to purchase that way as opposed to actually having to get that whole boxed set.
I'm still wondering why Warners didn't release it individually. It doesn't make any sense. I hope you do get it at some point and you're very welcome.
I have the box set and recently watched the widescreen DVD. It looks and sounds terrific, and I found the movie to be far more enjoyable than I remembered it to be.
I did not pay $70 for the set. I think I paid (at most) $40, because I waited for a sale. The set includes nine movies:
Kismet
Hit the Deck
Broadway Melody of 1936
Broadway Melody of 1938 ("dear mr. gable ...")
Born To Dance
Lady Be Good
Deep In My Heart
Nancy Goes to Rio
Two Weeks With Love
Next time I see it's on sale, I'll let you know.
