>Maybe she and her hubby, Antonio Banderas, could do "South Pacific."
This from Howard Kissel in the Daily News. A GREAT, GREAT idea. Maybe finally, at long last, someone could capture Nellie with all her foibles as she's never ever been captured.
And if anyone doesn't agree that the failure to cast Doris Day in the movie wasn't one of Hollywood's direst mistakes, I don't want to hear about it.

Nellie has to SING. Maybe Melanie can lipsync to Mary Martin's OC album.
The fact that Doris did not make SOUTH PACIFIC is one of the great Hollywood tragedies. It would be worth it just to have a soundtrack of her singing that score!

Posted: 8/4/03 at 5:14pmI do not see Melanie playing Nellie. The character of Nellie has to have spunk. Has Melanie ever shown spunk?

I believe Melanie probably has shown 'spunk' before, not that it really should matter if she has or not. I mean, really, just because someone has been typecast in a certain kind of role for years doesn't mean they aren't capable of more.
That said, if the buzz about Melanie's singing, or lack thereof, is true, then I don't feel she should play Nellie at all.
Plus, I think Nellie works best if she's under 40.
Not so sure about Antonio's voice for Emile, I thought Antonio was more of a tenor.
I really, REALLY like the thought of Brian Stokes Mitchell as Emile. I think he'd play it excellently.
