I searched to see if anyone started a thread on this topic, and was suprised not to find anything.
I am a TRUE Kristin supporter...I have always loved all of her work and I am constantly eager to see what she is going to do next.
So, of course, I purchased her new album "As I Am". I am so disappointed--and it has nothing to do with the genre of her music. She didn't show off much of her talent, range, or versatility--the three things that she is known for. I keep trying to give the CD another chance, but I get bored.
What do you think?

Posted: 4/26/05 at 2:46pmI am a Kristin fan as well, but unfortunately I think this album is terrible. I don't hate it because it is Christian or anything, but why waste such an extraordinary talent on such bland music? Her personality doesn't come out on any of the songs, not even on "Taylor". Oh well, her first album is awesome and here's to hoping her next one will be much, much better.

Posted: 4/26/05 at 3:17pmYeah, I got it the other day, and was slightly disappointed. Some songs are good (the first one, the one written by Diane Warren and Taylor), but otherwise its below-average. I mean, she does a good job with the music, but it doesn't display Kristin's strengths.

Wow-- no personality on Taylor? Really? I can't imagine a more personality-filled performance myself.
And while I personally don't much care for the material I think that her love for this material shines through much more than on her first album, which I found to be pretty much "by the numbers." There are a few nice tracks scattered through.
I wouldn't necessarily recommend it on this board and I think the responses here pretty much sum up why: "Kristen" fans know what they want and this isn't it. I think for people who haven't been exposed to her theatre work, it's a keeper-- It's going to be the perfect Mother's Day present for my "Mother-in-law."

I really liked it... Wow... Am I the only one? It was good... different but good... "Borrowed Angels" is amazing... "Taylor" is of course hilarious... When she says "How are you?" I just is hilarious...
I loved the first CD but this second one is pretty good too...
Dont hurt me!

Posted: 4/26/05 at 4:39pmI love it. I'm normally not into that kind of music at all, but I can hear Kristin's soul so clearly and she makes all the songs beautiful. In terms of pure fun, there's no question that her first CD is better. But in terms of depth, I think her 2nd one is better. I love them both though.

One of the reasons I enjoy this album is because it is different. It is not what we expect from Kristin, which is exactly why I think it does show her talent, range and versatility. She shows that she can also tell a simple story through song, gently, simply and purely.
I agree with Joe: her love for what she is doing is the key to this album.

I think the reason that I don't like "Taylor the Latte Boy" on this recording because I have a version of her singing it live and there is just something about a live performance that a studio recorded version just can't capture.
I also think that if I had never heard Kristin before I would probably love this album, but because I know what she is capable of, I find it disappointing.
Her first album was great. Yeah, it was alot of standard Gershwin, Kern, Richard Rogers and Berlin songs, but those composers and style of music just suit her so perfectly.

Posted: 4/26/05 at 5:47pmI got it and was slightly disappointed as well. I enjoyed Taylor and Joyful Joyful but it felt way too overproduced. The spiritual angle had nothing to do with my disappointment- I have MANY Christian CDs, but I like good, and thought provoking Christian music.

Posted: 4/26/05 at 5:57pmI just saw her on NBC singing (channel surfing and found it). It was such a boring performance. She had her hands in her back pockets or holding her belt loops or something, and sang with this crocked smile. I was bored within the first 10 seconds and it didn't get better. Nice voice, anyone watching who didn't know her will not remember her by that performance.

Posted: 4/26/05 at 6:26pmHere it is, if Ambein the sleeping pill, ever gets yanked off the market you could most definitely substitute this insipid album as a sleeping aid. Where were the producers? And as for Taylor, the "how are you" moment was only slightly funny ONCE. It sounds like a mediocre singer got a hold of some karaoke backing tracks and put her vocal on them. Poor quality all around. This is in line with the oft repeated topic on this board. Chenoweth is not a great *studio* singer. All of what's great and interesting about her voice goes right out the window and turns bland on disc, much like Headley's.

Al - I agree. Some people are not good in the studio and I think Kristin, although I love her and her 1st album, is one of those people. She just has so much personality and it is almost impossible for all of that to come out in a studio. I got a video of a Kristin concert where she sang songs from the 1st album as well as "For Good". After seeing her perform them live, I didn't like the album versions of the songs as much.
On the flip side, there are people who only sound good in the studio, but I won't name names on this thread.
I give Kristin respect for doing an album that she was so passionate about, however I am still disappointed.
