L5Y

I love the cast recording for LAST FIVE YEARS, but has anyone seen the show? If so, how was it? I am going in mid-August to see it done in Charlotte, NC and I want to know if it is worth the drive. Holla Back!!

re: L5Y

I saw it with Norbert Leo Butz and Sherie Rene Scott. I really liked it a lot. I like the music, and I thought it was an interesting way to structure the "story"...although, I suspect it's helpful to have a clue of the framework before you go in. But like any other two actor show, it is only going to be as good as the people in the roles.

That being said, I'd go for it. 'Cuz if it's on target, it'll be worth the trip.

re: L5Y

The more you listen to it the more you will understand just how brilliant and crafted it is. There are so many clever details, musical nuances, and phrases that when put together make sense.

A more simpler one?

The Next Ten Minutes...the story is so close to "overlapping" that in the beginning of the song, Jamie is answering the questions that Kathy is going to ask at the END of the song.

Also, the orchestrations transition throughout the score just as the actors and moods of the songs.

It gets better the more you listen to it.

I think you should go for it just based on the fact that I adore the Cast recording and I am completely addicted to it!

re: L5Y

My school (Wayne State) will be putting on a student directed version of it this February..

I'm interested to see how they will pull it off, since I'm completely obsessed with the score.

re: L5Y

I don't think it is JRB's best score.....that award goes to PARADE, but LAST FIVE YEARS is brilliant. CAN'T WAIT!!!!

re: L5Y

I really can't choose which of JRB's scores are his best, because they are all different and they are all amazing. I would say that Parade is his biggest achievement, because he was able to take subject matter that definitely didn't cry out "MUSICAL!", and made it funny, touching, and thought-provoking.

re: L5Y

I had tears in my eyes the first time I listened to PARADE. I was jumping up and down in my seat in the car dancing to SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD. And, I sat there and soaked everything in when I first listening to LAST FIVE YEARS.

re: L5Y

I saw it with Norbert and Sherie as well and LOVED it. There are so many magical moments like "The Schmuel Song" and "See I'm Smiling". :)

re: L5Y

I love the songs, but I really need to see the show to see what all is happening during the songs, because sometimes I am clueless to what the crap is happening.

speaking of JRB, on BWW radio...... "Just One Step" from SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD is on. I love this song. So witty.

Thanks for pointing that out Paul. I can't believe I never really noticed that before!

re: L5Y

I have not seen it, but I love it.

Actually, if you just listen to the recording, you don't need the synopsis.
It's all there.
I starred in a short film called Magnetic Personality. Check it out!

re: L5Y

FF..yeah it's technically all there..I just thought I was going nuts when listening to it! I mean I figured it was going backwords or something after a little while but at first I thought it was either in the wrong order or I was just plain crazy to not understand it! Then I figured out later...thanks to the great assistance from everyone on this board...that Cathy starts at the end of their relationship and Jamie starts at the beginning and they meet during "The Next Ten Minutes". I cannot wait to see a production! I am absolutely addicted!

Ohh and on a side note I just bought the cast recording of "Parade" and it is phenomenal so far. I really have to listen to them a few times before I start to appreciate it but I am really enjoying it. The subject matter is so far from that of L5Y but I can still hear and feel the same depth and heart felt emotions that JRB captures in everything!

re: L5Y

JRB is just amazing... the set for the one i saw was pretty simplistic, a bench that moved around a few different platforms
the cool thing was that the orchestra was in a cylindrical area covered with muslin in the center of the stage and things would rotate around it.

re: L5Y

Last fall, we had to do final presentations for my Italian class about something you were passionate about, for like 10 minutes just in Italian, without notes. I chose "L5Y" as my topic.

I still don't know how I managed to explain that musical in Italian.
Some days, I can't even explain it in English.
I starred in a short film called Magnetic Personality. Check it out!

woow.. ff, that would be extremely hard

re: L5Y

i saw a production of this in at my school, and the show is SOOOO a sing through. there are hardly any (if any at all) true scenes, by that i mean NOT singing that occurs outside the middle of song with underscore. all youre missing is some phone calls that occur during breaks in the songs (like that long instrumental part in "moving too fast" is a big phone call that jamie makes, etc.), and youve got the whole show...its really interesting, but just dont be expecting any scenes.
