I saw the show on New Year's Eve. I flew in from LA and my best friend flew in from Chicago. We spent good money on the tickets and on the hotel rooms. We had expected a score on the order of Billy Elliot, Elton John's brilliant last musical. Nothing could have prepared us for this disaster!
I don't know where to begin. The acting was completely over the top and hammy. Carolee was out and her understudy sang off-key. The eroticism of Anne Rice's novel was missing in action. The direction was non-existent. The songs were incredibly MEDIOCRE. The book was interminably long and uninteresting. Unlike most people, however, I thought the video projections worked well...especially when compared to the video game projections of Woman In White.
It is very clear that this show is NOT ready for Broadway. Even if they re-tool it with a new book and a new director, the lousy score will still SINK this show.
"It does what a musical is supposed to do; it takes you to another world. And it gives you a little tune to carry in your head. Something to take you away from the dreary horrors of the real world. A little something for when you're feeling blue. You know?"
