Helping Jennifer Hudson get an EGOT is not justification whatsoever for potentially denying Renée Elise Goldsberry of a Tony this year. Stop talking about it until you've seen her performance. Only then can you understand.

The star power for sure will work in her favor, we all know how the Tony's love when Hollywood comes to Broadway but this time it would be justifiable for Jennifer because I hear she's simply amazing. I also love how she brings a feminine quality to the role of shug. The other productions Ive seen from this show the actresses made the choice to play her very butch and aggressive, which sometimes makes it hard for that productions Celie to have a major impact. I feel what Cynthia and Jennifer have done with their performances really compliment the strengths of the Color Purple and their characters. And I would honestly love to see her one more award closer to the legendary EGOT!"
Ah Very true. I can't wait to contribute more to this conversation after I've seen most of these possibly nominated shows. AH I love that she would be so close to the EGOT. And with her stint on Empire, she could come up with a nomination at some point! I am just waiting for Audra to get her Oscar and be our next EGOT winner. Those two really deserve it in my opinion. :)

I think you misunderstood me as I was just acknowledging the fact it would be cool if she were closer to the EGOT. I obviously have no clue who I would vote for until I see the shows. Like I said earlier in the thread, Goldsberry has most of my friend's votes so I don't think there is any lack of enthusiasm for her hopeful win. I'm so excited for both shows and both of their performances!

All this EGOT talk is silly, in my opinion. The awards should go to the most deserving this season. Ms. Hudson isn't giving a TONY worthy performance in The Color Purple. Simple as that. She's fine.
Cynthia is giving a gorgeous performance and should win this year in the Lead Actress category. That is undeniable, in my opinion.
Who cares whether Jennifer gets an EGOT or not? Would you deny someone else who DOES deserve to win the Tony this year the award only so Jennifer can have an EGOT? Perhaps she'll receive a nomination. But I'm not even 100% sure that will happen. It's quite a packed category this year.

Once again posters on this board are so pressed for negativity that you will argue a point that wasn't even made. If anyone of you numb nuts actually read the exchange between me and Jshan you will not see neither one us saying Jennifer Hudson deserves this award to have an EGOT. As fans of hers were saying that it would be great if she did win because it would put her closer to the EGOT. My initial post said it was between me Jennifer and Renee, I'm not dimming Renee's light. I'm just more for Hudson from what I've heard about her performances. If you don't agree that's fine but no need to be nasty with your opinion. Not everybody I know feels that what Renee is doing is all that great either, different strokes for different folks, some will like what you do some won't. But once again so far I hope Jennifer Hudson wins cry me a river if you don't like it. This isnt just for you Anderson its for the other poster who told me and Jshan not to express our opinion like this isn't a public forum to discuss things.

I completely agree with BroadwayConcierge - Renee"s performance is the most Tony-deserving supporting female performance I have seen in years. I have to go back to Audra in the original production of Ragtime to think of a featured actress in a musical who was as much of slam-dunk as Renee is. While I agree it is a great year for women with a lot of great performance, Renee is just on a whole different level. If Renee is not a lock, there is something very wrong with the system.

Well nothing is a lock nowadays, specially since Jan's Tony did not end up in her bag. But at least we can hope Renee is a lock.

Renee Elise Goldsberry has the biggest momentum and buzz right now. I saw Krakowski, Hudson, Brooks, Kalukango, and Goldsberry within a few days apart last week and have to say that this is a hell of a category. The women in THE COLOR PURPLE are all stunning, but Hudson's acting when she is not singing is probably the weakest of the bunch (doesn't matter really, it's still a touching, beautiful performance). Kalukango is sublime and I'd love to see her get in but I don't think Nettie has enough stage time or a big showstopping song like Sophia does to get her recognized in such a competitive year. Brooks rocks as Sophia and I imagine she'll get in, I don't see her winning though. From the group of women I saw, Krakowski and Goldsberry were my favorite in terms of delivering on all fronts. Jane Krakowski plays Ilona as if the role had been written specifically for her, it's pure musical theatre and I'd love to see her recognized. I'd consider her a lock for a nod. Goldsberry will get in and probably win. She is stunning, and I'll never forget her performance of "Satisfied." I'd probably vote for Krakowski but I think Goldsberry is HAMILTON's only acting lock, and rightly so.

In my opinion, this award should be between Danielle and Krysta. Danielle gives off a kind of enthusiasm that you just can't beat- she seemed to enjoy every second of stage time, and she has an amazing voice. Her performance was just amazing! And Krysta was incredible. I didn't think a role so small could reduce me to tears in the matter of a song. Renee is also amazing, but I really feel as though her acting wasn't the strongest point- I get Hamilton is an ensemble piece, but I wasn't really feeling *anything* for Angelica (or Eliza, or Hamilton, for that matter). The Hamilton cast have some amazing voices (especially Renee), but I don't really think they compare to the performances Danielle and Krysta were giving.

My dispensable 2 cents -
Renee Elise Goldsberry - she's greatly benefitted by excellent material and her voice is outwardly. But there's just so much going on in the story.
Krysta Rodriguez - she made me cry, multiple times. Her decision to add somewhat childish innocence to the role made the eventual maniac look in her eyes when Moritz died so... raw. True loss of childhood happened then, instead of when she was shunned - and that to me was riveting.
Jennifer Hudson - yet again, the choices made by her to modify the character to be vulnerable were so inspired and touching. I gave both "Push Da Button" and "Too Beautiful For Words" standing ovations because of how STRONG and vulnerable she was.
Danielle Brooks - her energy was so fantastic, and she really did enjoy every second of being on stage. The voice, the brashness, the traits she brought from her OITNB character were so crisply executed. My only complaint with her was the one serious scene where she was beaten up and jailed - I did not believe that scene. It sounds awful to say this, but the original production and movie did a much better job of selling the "brokenness" of the character in that scene.
Joaquina Kalukango - was genuinely fantastic. I really think she deserves a nomination, her role is significantly more important to both the story and the overall success of the show, than, say, Harpo's.
Jane Krakowski - haven't seen her apart from the clips online, but she seems like the perfect casting choice.
I wouldn't mind either of the ladies whom I saw win, but am leaning towards Renee because I'm in love with her.
Do we expect any of the Waitress actresses to show up here, from folks who saw the ART production. Are their characters important enough?
