I know the soundtrack is out May 3rd but is it true it is being sold at the theater?

Before someone says it in a not-so-nice way, it is a "Cast Recording", not a "Soundtrack" (Soundtracks are ONLY for movies).

And it may be sold at the theater, but I honestly have no clue.

Well KarenWalker you need really call the CD what it is which in this case is an Original Broadway Cast Recording. There have been 3 movie versions of "Little Women" and you could have easily been referring to any one of those when you called the CD a SOUNDTRACK.

Though Mr Roxy is jesting (at least I hope) there is nothing incorrect about called "soundtracks" Movie Cast albums...since that is eaxactly what they are: albums of songs performed by the cast of the movie.

However, calling cast albums "soundtracks" implies that the cast is lip-synching to pre-recorded tapes and that the Cd's are just transferred from those tapes. Now WE all know that isn't the case at all.

For this reason I would like to see the term "soundtrack" eliminated for good: Cd's would be billed as "movie cast" or "movie score" (for background scores), Broadway cast, London cast, Toronto cast etc.

I'm sorry, but I can't believe how you guys jump down people's throats about this. At least they're interested in the recordings, which judging by cast album sales lately, is a very good thing. They can call them "prerecorded shiney circular thingee's" for all I care, as long as they buy them.

And to answer your question, the CD is for sale at various locations throughout the city. I bought mine downtown the other day.

Matt, I am starting to think something. When people who knew what they were talking about said something like this the first time, it made sense. Now I think posters just say it to be "cool." Agree?

I certainly hope my earlier message didn't appear that i was jumping down anyone's throat.

That said, I would expect people on Broadway world to be true theatre fans and know - or at least appreciate knowing - the correct terminology.

LOL! Maybe before new members are allowed to post they must sign a waiver stating they know the difference between the two terms and vowing to use the correct terms, or risk being banned for a month!

I think y'all need to loosen up on this termonology. Yes, it is called a "cast recording" but who gives a flip if someone calls it a "soundtrack." a soundtrack still implies that it is songs from the show. and if someone wants to call it a "broadway show poster" instead of a "window card," let them do it!

it's not like the entire broadway community is going to come crashing down upon us as punishment for calling it a "soundtrack" or a "poster." correct termonology...yes, but get over it.

Ummm..no. The term "soundtrack" does not mean that at all.

It actually means the audio strip along the side of a film. In the 1940s M-g-M records pioneered the idea of recording selections "directly from the soundtrack" and issueing them on records. These were called Soundtrack Albums. The industry later abbreviated it to just the word "Soundtrack."

Stage shows do not use pre-recorded audio tracks. The casts perform live every night. The recordings we buy are studio recordings made with the home listener in mind so much of the material has to be changed. It's almost like doing a radio version of the show, condensed to about one-hour. Cast albums are a curious amalgam. They never record exactly what is heard on stage but they create that iullusion. That is why so many flop shows left behind great sounding cast albums.

While it IS correct to call movie sountracks "cast recordings" (since they are the movie casts), it is incorrect to call a cast recording a soundtrack.

For GREASE you can buy the Broadway cast, the movie cast, or the Broadway revival cast. For SOUND OF MUSIC you choose from the Broadway cast, the movie cast, the Broadway revival cast or the London cast.

In short, all we have to do is lose the word soundtrack and refer to all show recordings as cast recordings. CR for short! The London CR, the movie CR, The Broadway CR, The Timbuktiu CR....
