Posted: 4/12/04 at 11:10amYeah Jack, I feel really pathetic now that you've said I am. Gosh I'm so terribly wounded, I may never post again and start one of those *pathetic* threads about why I'm going, in hopes that everyone will beg me to stay. Whatever your reasons/stake in this are, is irrelevant to the fact that the show is NO ONE's idea of a hit. Face it. And furthermore, I was (for once) defending it's teflon status. Now who's pathetic?

Oh Al Darling. I didn't say YOU were pathetic. Don't go getting drama queen on me. I refered to your statistical data reporting was pathetic. And it's no secret you don't like the production currently on stage at the Virginia. Stunt casting would definitely keep percentages into "hit status" - so I agree with your statement that alternative casting would see it run for a longer time. I never said it was a "HIT". But for a show that so many said would close after the reviews came out (cough, Al) let's be honest for a moment and say, despite what anyone thinks - it's been the little (big) show that could this season. And by that I mean - it's held it's own so far.

I don't know about LSOH contracts, but aren't most a year from opening night?

Posted: 4/12/04 at 12:13pmLSOH reviews: According to Variety LSOH got 9 positive to raves against 3 negatives and that is better than all the other revivals. The only one close is Wonderful Town but Donna got the raves while the show was described as adequate. I dont think it will happen but LSOH should win best revival.

Posted: 4/12/04 at 12:16pmI tend to trust the judgement of my musical theatre performer friends who see shows - and everyone I know who has seen this show HATED it...so I'd be happy to see it close and make room for something good.

Whoa guys - I thought I made myself clear - my friends are my friends because I like and trust them and generally we all agree about our theatrical tastes...I've rarely disagreed with them and I hate Kerry Butler - so thats the end of that. I'd have loved to see Alice Ripley do it. And why should I spend all that money to see a show with leads I hate and bad reviews from my knowledgable friends who are all in the business?
'Nuff said.

Posted: 4/12/04 at 2:27pmwow you guys do get intense on these subjects. What it all boils down to for me is that I have no interest in seeing it with this cast and this director. Everything I've heard about the show has been negative - other than what people post on this board. I understand that you guys may love the show and I think that's great - but as for me - I'd prefer to see some real art go into that theatre rather than yet another revival or a badly done show.

But, it isn't as if this production isn't attempting to be art or well done--it just isn't landing with everyone. The fact also is that audiences are eating it up. I DO recommend it to people because I know they will have fun and enjoy it, regardless of any critique I might have of it. It's one of the few shows on Broadway that average Joe theatregoer and his kids are going to enjoy. If it creates future Broadway audiences, then I say good for it's being around, and may it be around for some time!
If you happen to not like Kerry and Hunter, go see it when they leave. Perhaps you will like others in the production. It is a handsome production of the musical--I hope we can agree on that.

Posted: 4/12/04 at 3:06pmJRB = that was very eloquently said and you make a lot of sense. I, myself just don't want to spend any more money on revivals of shows I've seen (or been in) a hundred times. But if it brings new audiences to the Theatre and someone out there enjoys it - I think thats great.
