Gershwin: 1933 seats
Majestic: 1700 seats
New Amsterdam: 1702 seats
Broadway: 1752 seats
New York State Theatre: 2755 seats
Metropolitan Opera: 3800 seats plus 195 standing room

I don't think the size of the house was the problem. The Broadway was well suited to the nature of the piece. Opera by its nature is not meant to run eight shows a week. It was a valiant effort, but not a sound business decision.

Yes that's what I read in an article with Baz Luhrman..that he needed a huge theatre to fit the needs of the piece.

Man I'm sad it failed then. I would have loved to see it.

That's interesting, because it was wonderful in the Curran, which is pretty intimate. The Ahmanson was way too huge for it, IMO.
