Joizey, since no one seems to be answering your question, I'll interject.
Listen to all of them! They're all great songs, but if you can't listen to all of them, listen to "I Am What I Am", "Song on the Sand", "Look Over There", and "The Best of Times". Especially "The Best of Times".
Now, I haven't known of the show for long (a few months or so), so it might be better if someone who knows more about the recommended songs. But, no one was answering you question, so I thought I'd help.

I love Gavin's long hair and I will cry when he cuts it.

Okay - La Cage was the first professional tour I did. I played Mercedes the bitch. I still hope I was not typecast! Because this was my first, I am very fond of it. The opening number alone is worth the ticket. It features a chorus line of 12 drag queens, (two were actually women, and the challenge is to pick out which ones they are from the line-up) There are three costume changes in the opening number, all of which are in full view of the audience. The songs best remembered are Song on the Sand, Look OverThere, The Best of Times, and I Am What I Am. There are two big production numbers, The opening - big tap number - and Later in act One, La Cage aux Folles, which features a gruelling Can Can. Also the number With You on My Arm between Georges and Albin is really great. The script is a bit weak - if they took some of Elaine May's stuff from The Birdcage and punched it up, it would be a bit better. Only because the musical is based on a French farce by the same name and May's Birdcage script is more modern. The roles of the son and daughter are not well written, in fact the Daughter Anne is basically a dance role, and the sonis written a bit heartless and cruel. But it's a fun show - will be interesting to see the new staging and all. I can't believe it's been 20 years! :) Updated On: 9/1/04 at 12:52 PM
I'm sure Gavin is going to cut his hair when he starts La Cage--I can't see his character with long, groovy hair. It does look a little greasy, but it also makes him look like an entirely different person.
OH! GAVIN GAVIN GAVIN! most amazing person ever! im stoiked to see him in LA CAGE.... execution is a little hasty! we email and he is the SWEETEST THING EVER! JUST AGREE ME THAT HE'S AMAZING
I like Gavin as much as the next guy, but La Cage just isn't his party. It's a Beach Party! Now if we're gonna talk AMAZING, let's all take a moment to even envision how AMAZINGLY AMAZING Gary Beach will be as Albin! Ah it's going to be a La Cage for the ages!

OK - gotta throw my 2 cents in here. I don't care a whit about Gavin. I do love Gary to bits. But I'll be going to see Daniel. I'm so glad to see him FINALLY in a leading role in a B'way musical. He deserves it so much and I deserve a chance to see/hear him in it!
diva- thank you for your input! you were very informative. i haven't seen the show before and i'm really looking forward to it. do you know if the script in the new version will have had a face lift?
(btw joizey actor- kristin looks like a twelve-year old boy in that picture!?)

Broadway Matt - I. Love. You. So much that it needs three sentences to fully make an impact.
I can't wait to see Gary Beach as Albin. This is (hopefully) going to be my birthday present.
Beach party!
I love it. I love everything, woohoo. AMAZING.
Do we know yet just who is designing set and costumes? I love the original's David Mitchell(?) sets, how you saw the town which then split to reveal the club exterior and then the curtain coming down from the flies to unravel (from the centre) to fill the stage with the shows title. Ahh happy memories!
WannabDiva's description of the opening brought these memories flooding back!
There will be two musicals on Broadway this year set in San Tropez, La Cage and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
I actually like Gavin with his long locks more. Have you seen the pictures from his concert? With him wearing the cowboy hat and the tight jeans? Hottest ever!
I'm really looking forward to La Cage.
i downloaded all those pictures!!!!! he is the hottest thing since brad pitt! no joke! p.s. blue wizard: hey fellow groom... how YOU doin?
