I saw it! I saw La Cage. I went to the eight o'clock show on Saturday. Oh my god. It...oh my god. I'm way too tired to write a review right now - I just got back from New York - but when I'm more comprehensible, I will go into thorough detail about how magnificent it was. Gahhh. We - me and my friend, Ali - were in row L, almost at the center. Before the show, we saw someone a few rows ahead of us get up for a second. We both turned to each other and our mouths fell open. It was
William Ivey Long. After exchanging "Oh my god, it's William Ivey Long"'s and "Should we go talk to him?"'s, we garnered our courage and pushed our way out of the aisle. We gushed about how he was a genius, and how beautiful his costumes are in the shows he works on. He was very flattered, and told us to come back during intermission and tell him what we thought. When he sat down, I looked back at our row to confirm something that had been floating around in my head. See, this was the second time we'd left the row (the first time was to get t-shirts in the lobby). Each time, I apologized profusely for making these poor men get up to let us by. Each time, I glanced at the man sitting at the end of the row, trying to figure out if he was who I thought he was. So, after Mr. Long sat down, I grabbed Ali's arm and whispered, "Ali. Look at the man sitting at the end of our row. That's
Jerry Herman."
We couldn't pluck up the courage to talk to him, so we simply squeezed by him again, apologizing, and sat in our seats. The show started a minute or two after that, I think. But, more on the show tomorrow. At intermission, Ali and I were just...messes. We were both crying. We stood at the end of our row and tried to talk, but we couldn't speak. I think Jerry Herman (who was standing right behind me) overheard us babbling about how incredible it was. We wandered around the lobby, since Mr. Long had mysteriously disappeared. He still wasn't back by the time the Entr'acte started, which was disappointing, because...wow. Those costumes were so incredible.
After the show, we went to the stage door. Gary Beach came out, and, since I was frozen, Ali gushed about how fantastic he is. While she took a breath, I managed to squeak, "Love you."
We also talked to Daniel Davis, Harvey Fierstein (I remembered to congratulate him on Tevye, and he laughed and thanked me), Jerry Zaks (I actually didn't meet him. Ali is a huge fan of his, and realized at one point that he had slinked out the door and was walking away. I told her I'd wait, and she ran after him and got his autograph), Michael Benjamin Washington, and...uh, one of the Cagelles. We were waiting for Brad Musgrove (who was so incredible sexy as Hanna!), but we must've missed him. One of the Cagelles came out, so we burst forward and asked for his autograph. We couldn't read his handwriting, so we're not sure who it was, but he was adorable.
Oh, wow. I'll actually review the show and post pictures tomorrow. I'm sure you all just loved hearing everything except about the show itself.
