This is a verrrry weak number in a very nice score. While certainly not Jerry Herman's best(that would be MAME followed closely by HELLO DOLLY! and MACK AND MABEL) LA CAGE AUX FOLLES has indeed a very good score. But, what is it with the "Masculinity" song????? The creative team thought this song was good? I thought that they might replace this song for the revival as well as improving the shows "serviceable, but not very inspired book." Does anybody out there think that Maculinity is a good song? Jerry Herman couldn't do better than that song? I find that soooo curious.
Masculinity for me ranks along with Little Lamb from GYPSY and We'd Like to Thank You Herbert Hoover from ANNIE as very weak songs that surprisingly survived in very successful scores.
Beav, I know Mr. Herman is very busy with his interior design career. Don'tcha think he coulda pulled something from his trunk or written something new to replace this clunker?
Offhand, I can't think of "such a weak" song in any other Herman show. I suspect there are, I am just not recalling any.
"little lamb"
HAHAHAH...I had completely forgotten about that song....

Jwei123, consider yourself lucky:)
not only is that song bad, but i have heard some HORRENDOUS renditions...like from people who should no longer be allowed to sing.

I saw the thread entitled "songs you hate in scores you love". I was thinking "Little Lamb".
millie, millions are with ya on that song. It is often mentioned on boards like this and other theater discussion places.

i wholeheartedly disagree about Little Lamb. if the song is directed & performed correctly it's fantastic. I saw a production (a community theater production, no less) in which the actress playing Louise moved me with that song every bit as much as Rose did with Rose's Turn. I'm of the opinion that the song is as important as the director/performer think it is. If they think it's throwaway, so will the audience.
