'La Cage' Revival Cast Recording...

I am so happy to see the announcements of all the musicals that will be recorded and released this spring, but I cannot help but free incredibly sad and dismayed by the lack of a recording from the now-playing 'La Cage' revival. I know many of you have expressed a strong interest in a recording of the revival, but how many of us are there? Let's please all post here and decide how we can go about requesting an album and where we can send it. The information is conflicting: Merchandise salespeople at the Marquis are telling patrons that a recording is not going to happen. Daniel Davis and Gary Beach are both under the impression that it will be recorded. Broadway.com's Ken Mandelbaum admits that it's odd it has yet to be recorded, but "one suspects that a recording of the new La Cage might still happen." Jerry Herman has expressed enthusiastic feelings on producing an album, but still says "IF." Sorry for rambling, but it seems that even if none of the large labels will pick this one up, couldn't Ghostlight or PS Classics consider it? I know there is a desire for this recording to come about, so please, let's see what we can do!
Thanks for listening!

Posted: 2/4/05 at 3:29pmWhy wouldn't they make a recording of it??? I'm sure that there are many broadway fan's who buy revival recording and have multiple recording of stuff....I have 4 cabaret's and 3 Chicago's. Plus, I'm sure it will be a big name at the Tony's this year, for people like me....way down in Texas.....those recording are your only link.

Posted: 2/4/05 at 3:29pmI agree that it is really strange, especially considering the production got pretty good reviews and it's doing fairly well at the box office. I really enjoyed it and would love a recording. I just thought the entire cast was amazing.

i would love to have a cd of the revival cast [since that is the one i've seen]
the poster alone would look great as a CD cover
do y'all think it would help to e-mail some labels asking them to consider releasing it? DRG released Taboo after it closed.
Hmmmm

Posted: 2/4/05 at 7:16pmI think the sells of the CD would be really good. Which would be awsome for a smaller label. They are AMAZINGLY CRAZY NOT to do one!!!!

I would definitely buy it! Record it dammit!!!
#9re: 'La Cage' Revival Cast Recording...
Posted: 2/4/05 at 7:20pmI just don't think it's good enough to record. The original was far better and captures the music in ways the revival cannot. IT's not like the original CD sells all that well, why put all the money into a new one when it's probably not going to sell all taht well? I'm not ANTI a new recording, but I understand why they're hesitant. I, personally, wouldn't buy it because I think the revival is terrible, but I hope for all the fans sake that they do record it because I know how frustrated I am when they don't record something I love.

MTVMANN: Under the BWW articles heading to the right, there's one for new releases. It has most of the upcoming recordings, save for a few others that have recently been announced.
Pacific Overtures Revival Cast - PS Classics (recorded 2/1)
Little Women - Ghostlight Records (to be recorded 2/2
All Shook Up - Sony/BMG Records (to be recorded 4/4)

Posted: 2/4/05 at 7:47pmThe CD may not sell but it's certainly not because the original cast was better than the revival. The original CD is terribly frustrating because of the poor singing. The current cast is much, much better and THIS is the score to be saved. Good lord - the pathetic shows that ARE getting recorded makes this decision (if in fact a decision has been made) simply ludicrous.

#13re: 'La Cage' Revival Cast Recording...
Posted: 2/4/05 at 7:56pmWell just recently "Little Women". That score is truly pathetic. And frankly I'm less than impressed with shows that get the recording contract set up before they've even opened. It's all part of the cult of 'personality' and that has never appealed to me. (I realize that this attitude places me somewhere back in the dark ages - but there you are.)

Posted: 2/4/05 at 7:59pmI haven't heard all of LITTLE WOMEN, but from what I've heard it's nice. It's not Sondheim, but it's not down to Mel Brooks' level, so I'm not complaining. I just really don't enjoy Herman's score, and I think LA CAGE is a terrible show. I don't know what that makes me.

just two folks with two different opinions I guess. (And doesn't this thread make you sad that Audrey and Greer never appeared together in any film? It would have been glorious on the eyes if nothing else!)

Just heard the Gary Beach interview on XM Radio Ch 28 Broadway channel. "Downstage Center".
They talk about the cast album and Gary said they are going in soon to make the recording.

Daniels has a much better voice than Gene Barry. Beach played the role a little too comically . He was good but Hearn was better . I liked this physical production better. The staging & orchestrations were better. The blue outfit that Beach wore though was incredibly hideous & was like something out of burlesque or Vegas. Costumes, other than this item, were first rate. The Cagelles were more masculine looking this time around
For Daniels voice alone & the orchestrations, I would like a new recording also

I really like La Cage, and would def purchase a recording (but, let's face it, with my enormously large crush on Gavin Creel, I would buy it even if I thought the music sucked. And yes, I do indeed have Bounce...)
What I'm thinking is that, if they haven't made a recording already by Tony time, if it does well (Tony-wise), they'll get one. I don't think the revivals going to play on Broadway for that long of a time (def a few more months, maybe a year, but as soon as the stars are gone, unless they can get big names in, that's it) just because it's not the most popular thing like people thought it was going to be but maybe they'll be like Assassins, which got its recording after it closed. I dunno. It's a great show, though. If I had the money I'd go again (and sit in the front row on the audience left because that's where Gav stands for awhile siiiiigh. I'm truly ridiculous sometimes, you know)

When did this interview take place? It is just recently? Wonderful news if it was, but if the interview was done in say December, plans might have changed since... =(
I'm so excited to see so many people who want this recording! Herman's score is too good to not receive additional recordings other than the original and this cast is too good to let it slide. I wish someone with a record label would realize that!

That's what I'm thinking. It might not do a damn thing, but it's definitely worth a try. If they receive enough requests, maybe a label that wasn't even considering it would stop and think.
Anyone who wants to see the revival recorded and has a few minutes, send off some emails to record labels!
