La Jolla Playhouse Gets New Artistic Director

Christopher Ashley, the director of "Regrets Only," the 2000 revival of "The Rocky Horror Show" and the coming Broadway production of "Xanadu," has been named the new artistic director of the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego.

He will replace Des McAnuff, who is leaving to become one of three artistic directors at the Stratford Festival in Ontario.

Mr. Ashley, 42, said in an interview yesterday that he intended to put together seasons that were a mix between "shows that are popular enough to have an ongoing life and shows that are provocative." Because he learned of his appointment only last week, he has not yet taken any formal steps in programming the 2008-9 season.

But among his plans were more new musicals and plays and a residency for a local San Diego theater group. He starts in October.

Given Ashley's credits and comments, the news is not very exciting. Glad I'm not in CA
