No word on a cast album for LA CAGE as yet and it is seeming less and less likely.
As for currently available versions what choice is there other than the 1983 OBCR? (Which, by the way, has not been remastered since it came out in CD in 1984.)
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I still hate that there still isn't any plans to record the revival. You think a few of those billions of people who came up on stage to accept the best revival award would now pony up some cash to do a new recording.
And there is a slight choice between La Cage recordings. There's the regular OBC that you can find in stores, and there's the ARKIV print on demand version that has a bonus track of Jerry Herman singing "I Am What I Am". Sad that this is the only viable English language version available (there's an Australian cast recording, but only on LP, and there are a couple of "studio cast" versions, but I don't know the quality of these). I've had to make due with the two German language recordings and the recent Japanese recording.

Posted: 6/15/10 at 6:51pmI'm glad you brought this up....I was listening to the Rosie O'Donnell show on Sirius about a week or so ago and it was a repeat show with Harvey Fierstein as her guest and they were chatting about La Cage...I'm not sure when it was originally broadcast, but Harvey was in the midst of the Fiddler tour (I think he said the next stop was Wash DC) and La Cage hadn't opened yet, but when Rosie commented on a cast album, Harvey said that they had just recently recorded the London cast of this production and he was hoping for a new Broadway cast recording....I was a bit stunned because I hadn't heard that the London cast (with, I assume, Doug Hodge) had been recorded, but Harvey clearly stated it as if it had indeed already happened......anyone know anything about this???

I heard something ALONG time ago about a recording, but nothing official (I think it was a tag along with the Night Music release, and nothing else has emerged since!)
I personally recommend the OACR! Which is the australian recording. It is much higher quality than the OBCR and the orchestrations sound richer! I also think the singing in genral is much improved... although I do miss Hearn, the Australian Albin was VERY good!

When I interviewed Jerry Herman, we talked about a new LA CAGE recording

Posted: 6/16/10 at 2:22amI think there is a recording in the works. I saw pictures of the cast and orchestra in a recording studio, unless they were just recording for something else.

Posted: 6/16/10 at 12:52pmIt would really be a shame for this production to remain unrecorded. The music that was missing from the OBR could be included. I do hope some Cage lover with deep pockets finds it within himself/herself to foot the cost. A dream, perhaps, but such a nice one!
