I didn't see this, but I remember when it happened. Who had money in the 70s? Not me.

Anyway, Brynner sold out the Gershwin (then called the Uris) for 18 months. The show made money hand over fist for everyone. But when Angie did the role, the real theatre folk stayed home and the grosses were pitiful. Like a drop from let's say 400 grand to 150Gs.

It was Brynner or nothing.

I think it's interesting that Angela was nominated for the Drama Desk in 1978 for Best Actress.

As posted in another thread about this, "The King and I" was my second Broadway show. I couldn't have been more bored to tears with the way Yul Brynner mumbled his way through the performance I saw. I was so disappointed, because I knew I was supposed to be seeing a legend in the role, but I remember saying to my grandmother that I couldn't understand a word he was saying. As a matter of fact, my grandmother didn't like it either. Though part of me wanted to go back and see Angela Landsbury because I remember reading a good review on the temporary replacements.

I saw a later tour, with Mary Beth Piel a bit later, early 80s, and I liked Yul.

Angela's rendition of "Shall I tell you what I think Of You?" was particularly memorable. She sang it to a stool in her bedroom and at the end gave it a swift kick.

I also liked her "Getting To Know You".
