All valid points...and this is actually a rather interesting discussion. Al-you can hardly say you're an expert on the matter because you have a friend who works for Allure magazine and happened to be on the red carpet...that's silliness. When they were in negotiations for the role, they did indeed have a "back-up plan" as was quoted to me by...let's just say someone vrey close to the production. But LBB did not back down when they offered her a salary that was not agreeable and other contractual terms that would have been stupid for her to take. She has several irons in the fire, some of which would not allow her to accept some of the contractual obligations being offered. And as for her "bid for attention" on the red carpet, she clearly was not the only one there trying to get noticed. Everyone walking the red carpet, is walking the red carpet to have their picture taken. Leave it alone. She's not only very talented but a really nice girl too, so enough of making personal judgements about someone based on whether or not they are taking a role that may or may not be the best career move.
If one can't speculate here, then where?
There are a lot of people who talk with great authority about various topics that come up. My point is that a theater message board is the very place where events like this are going to be talked about and picked over. And really, there's is no way to tell, with a couple of exceptions, who is credible and who isn't.
This phenomenon was made very apparent the other day in a thread about musical theater programs. Someone stated Julliard and Yale are excellent. Based on what? Neither school even offers musical theater, as it turns out. And for all any of us know, the person who posted that was still in middle school.
Whether or not JLT was on her way in for costume fittings or not isn't exactly the ultimate conclusion. Nothing is "final" until the paperwork is signed sealed as delivered as we have all "learned" from visiting various websites and message boards. It's entirely possible that based on the way negotiations were going on both sides that the producers were preparing a backup plan. Or maybe not.
Ultimately, unless you are Laura Bell Bundy or one of the producers at the "table" - everything else is hearsay and should be treated as such. There are more to negotiations than money, prestige of role, "status" as a performer and so on that can make or break a deal.
While I agree that we will never know what was offered to her, there are a couple points that I want to put out there. First of all LBB is a Tony Award Winner. Not for Best Leading Actress, but then again neither is Kristin Chenoweth. Also, not everyone realizes that you can get money back or to check if the main actors/actresses are in a show. While I do check on a show like WICKED, on other shows, I'm not really concerned b/c I know understudies are often as good if not better. While I think the show will continue to thrive, we can't know until after JLT takes over, and possibly not until Idina leaves.
For what did Laura Bell Bundy win a Tony? Did I miss something?
i'm still stuck on craig's assertion that there are more to negotiations than money.
butt for the record, lbb's posterior alone is worth more than they paid the bobblehead.
Papa...you've made it emphatically clear that you are a HUGE fan ever since the Standing O concert, lol.
flit, i just want it to be clear that i appreciate more than her rump. she's got a good set of...pipes too. and that smile...what was it the stones said? "she'd make a dead man..." uh huh.
Um, yep....I believe you were already waxing poetic about her many assets well before you stepped outta Joe's Pub.
well, flit, she, um, she smiled at me.
*sigh*

~ Laura Bell NEVER wona Tony. Hairspray and Wicked are her onlt two Broadway credits. CHENO won a Tony, but not for leading actress.
~ As far as her bag on the red carpet... she wore an ULTRA CLUTCH dress for hairspray. It seems to a be a theme with her.. not just WICKED.

So papa, I guess then you could hear the be-ells..."

I heard bells a few times while I was in the city...... once at Chicago, a few times at Bare, and a few times at Hairspray.......
by the time she smiled at me at joe's, i was hearing lotsa things!
PLM, you make my sides ache from laughter.
Dawg, just to be clear, I never professed to be an "expert" because I know someone at Allure. I believe that on another thread I said I knew a "little" something about being an agent and as such, recognized bad judgement calls when reading about them. All hearsay, obviously, however, if she felt that getting half of what Cheno, (a Tony winner and two time nominee), makes was an insult, she and her agent should have realized that, most likely, the amount of $ STILL would have been more than what Menzel, (who now HAS a Tony), will be making even after a Tony bump. Again, I wasn't in the negotiating rooms but it sounds like bad advice and an undeserved hyper inflated ego. Just my observation and the "word" on the street, so to speak.

I'm sure this will offend everyone, but I'm actually glad she's not taking over. I haven't know her to be the most truthful person, not to mention she reported on her webiste quite awhile ago that she had the role. She was good at the part, but I really think while shes a good performer she lacked the charisma the part needs. I'm sure she'll get another job soon. She seems to think she's already got a lot of things lined up, although she said she was taking over for KC too, so who knows where the truth actually lies.
And I also don't think being in a show that won a tony means you actually won one. Though once again that probably came from her website where she has listed that she has a tony for hairspray. Whatever makes her happy!

She won for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for HAIRSPRAY.
Actually, she wasn't nominated. Jane Krakowski won last year for NINE
Personally, I think there is a lot of speculation over things most people really can't confirm.
Craig is 100% right. Casting and negotiating contracts is a very complex ordeal. It is much more than money for many actors. What goes on at the table is a private matter between the performers and the powers that be.
I know from personal experience things can get tricky and even ugly when roles are up for grabs. This is not exactly a topic for discussion on a message board, though many seem to think second guessing is the thing to do.
If I were a Broadway performer, this is the last place I'd want my contract disected! I can't help but think it's an envasion of privacy. What seems like harmless nosey fun can often brew some ugly results.

#1 - Jeff, what assumptions did I make? I said in my opinion she lacked the charisma, I don't see how that is assuming anything at all. You're laughable.
#2 - she did not win the supporting actress tony for Hairspray - she wasn't even nominated. jane Krakowski won for Nine. The other nominees were :
BEST PERFORMANCE BY A FEATURED ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL:
Tammy Blanchard, Gypsy
Jane Krakowski, Nine
Mary Stuart Masterson, Nine
Chita Rivera, Nine
Ashley Tuttle, Movin' Out
so I actually DO know what I'm taking about, thanks though

She had on her website that she had a tony for hairspray ... I didn't assume that, I saw it on the website. Go to her website and check. It says under awards Tony for best musical for Hairspray. It just isn't an award she herself recieved though I do think the entire cast should be extremely proud in this accomplishment. I didn't assume that at all. It's right there on her site.
Maybe you should stop making the assumption that I don't know what I'm talking about.
