Umm...people are also paying too much money to have phones go off during a live performance so your argument doesn't hold. I also normally would have mixed feelings about actors breaking character for this, not because "I paid money" but because "show must go on",but phones audibly going off has become an epidemic. It still happens even after many an actorhas stopped a show for a bit to call it out. These are also well documented in and of themselves.Actors are tired of this nonsense. Regular patrons are tired of this nonsense. This is 2019, I honestly have just about nil empathy even for first time theatre goers, there's NO excuse for disruptive behavior or phones going off anymore. Theatre etiquette is not a secret, and even if itwere, it's just COMMON SENSE. It's a live show, it should be fairly obvious that these things would disrupt it."
it should also also be common sense for people to not record audio or request audio just because an understudy is going on yet apparently an understudy in Hadestown is going on later this week and I’ve seen requests on social media for audio ***thats an angry face emoji in case it doesn’t read
I've always felt that if something is happening that is distracting the audience from being immersed in the performance then the actors should stop the show until it ends. I once went to a ballet where in the middle of it there was some sort of technical difficulty with a high pitched sound going off and they kept performing and at intermission a manager came on to praise them for their professionalism. I was like what's the goal here? for performers to prove that they can keep performing through a major distraction or for the audience to actually appreciate and enjoy the performances? because with that high pitched sound, we were all covering our ears waiting for it to end, barely noticing what was happening on stage. It was a disservice to everyone for them to keep going. If a cell phone is going off and everyone notices it, then the moment is screwed anyway and it's the right decision to stop, let that distraction end, and then go forward. Yes, it sucks, but the alternative sucks even more.
