I think the real issue is addressing Trina as a "Jewish matriarch", which is something of a stereotype. Trina is Jewish, but I don't believe she represents the stereotypical "Jewish matriarch". She's Jewish and a mother, but pretty much the opposite of a matriarch, which is probably why there is so much versatility in casting the part. I saw Barbara Walsh and Carolee Carmello as Trina and they were both fantastic and believable Trinas.
Which reminds me...another wonderful choice for Trina would be Marla Schaffel, which could give her another shot at the Tony she should have won for Jane Eyre. Just sayin.
Please no Esparza or Murney. Not a fan.

Trina is definitely not a Jewish matriarch. Mister Matt, you describe her wonderfully, so I won't say any much more besides that I agree.
Marla Schaffel, to me, is a little bit too powerful. I prefer a smaller, slighter Trina. But I think that's just a personal preference.
I didn't "buy" Molina in FIDDLER, AC, but I loved him nonetheless. However, I don't think that saying you don't buy him, you're not into it, etc... is bigotry.

By the way on the subject of trina what in the world is she saying in this had better come to a stop
Chop chop chop chop chop I chopped it
Gorgeous food, the asshole forced me
And still the bastard divorced me
He's gotta have it all
He's like a baby who's denied

AC thank you very much i could never make out the rest another reason for a good revival a cd where you can make out all the parts it seems at least to me like one performer at least constantly has a bad mic so you can't make up their songs it's usually fraser and zien. But on the subject of benati no, she's one of those broadway women you THINK can belt because they have that hint of vibrato but when they belt it's a diffrent story. I agree about menzel or scott for trina.
