huh?
i am confused.
i think that not all actor's can play all roles. some things are better suited for certain people. no? BTW, i agree Orfeh would be AMAZING in Spamalot! i think sometimes, MANY times, producers/directors cast people that they like and like to work with, without any care to whether or not the person will actually be good in the part. i know there are people here who agree with that and who see it happen all the time.
that MAY be the case with Lauren doing Spamalot. i don't know, i haven't seen her.
so apparently the role isn't a good fit for her.
hopefully her next show will showcase her better. she is certainly deserving of being on Broadway. she is extremely talented.
Couple of points, I agree with Andrew that oftentimes someone gets hired because of a personal relationship with one or more of the powers that be in a production. there are any number of poor excuses to hire someone completely inapproprate for a role. It seems to happen all the time and here is the less than stellar result when that sort of thing *does* happen. Also I really hope this doesn't turn into another 6 page argument about Orfeh but I must say this doogie, Pipi wasn't a funny character, the greek chorus was supposed to be funny, so if there was any comedy put into Pipi, once again you have to credit Orfeh's abilities not (as Bree said), the source material. So I too disagree with you. Althought I liked the show alot more than Bree did.

i'll tell you what..Coleen Sexton and Kate Shindle would be hysterical Spamalot.
MANY would be better than Kennedy but none so perfect as Orfeh. It seems to be the consensus even amongst her detractors. It's simply undeniable.

Could it be that possibly Orfeh was approached regarding this role and maybe declined?
Bree-
I don't have them confused. While I agree Orfeh is a perfect fit for SPAMALOT, I just find her to be an anonymous actress with an INCREDIBLE voice. just my opinion.
Back to Lauren, if I may. I saw Lauren last night, and while she has an amazing voice - really not expected - she just did not fit the role. She tries, but the key to that role is to be able to just lay on the hamminess just as strong as the male roles, otherwise the scenes are just superfluous. As they were last night. But I do think the role is harder than it looks. There's a real balancing act there in being a goddess and a ham at the same time.
On another note, Simon Russell Beale is a true delight, in many ways superior to Tim Curry. There's an earnestness there that just makes him so endearing. As for Hank Azaria, I personally preferred Alan Tudyk in those roles. Hank just ad-libbed and mugged too much last night, even when the audience wasn't biting. But Chris Sieber, David Hyde Pierce and Michael McGrath are just as spectacular as ever. And Christian Borle just steals the show...I still wonder why he never got as much attention during Tony time.

The tough thing about Lady of the Lake is it was, as far as i can tell, completely Sara Ramirez's brilliant invention. If you strip her stage time down to words, lyrics, and music it is all pretty beige. So Sara comes in and rocks and her "bits" are added to the structure of the show and anybody that comes in has to try and squeeze into that. So, I think Sara Ramirez made it nearly impossible for anyone to come after her, not so much because she was so terrific but that the part was basically written around and for her many and extremely specific talents. Lauren does an admirable job at a nearly impossible task and sounds like a milllion bucks.
That was my exact point when suggesting Orfeh. Annette was no more than a beefy chorus role in the original Saturday night Fever. Pippi, well, thankless to say the least. Orfeh (much like Ramirez), can pull off making an indelible impression where none was expected or anticipated.
