La Bete was an original play which opened on Broadway in 1991. It is a verse play that is written in the style of Moliere, and takes place in the seventeenth century. What is it about? Hard to remember, but the central character is a bombastic schemer who (I think) politically tries to move himself up. He has an incredibly long monologue several minutes into the play. This is not an easy play to bring off, but for a school it is a strong challenge and I would think would be fun to work on. The playwright's name is Douglas Hirson

Sorry David O. Hirson wrote the book for "Pippin" and apparently fathered this David Hirson (no "O").

I liked it a lot too. Tom McGowan was wonderful - he went on to have quite a decent tv career.

Tom McGowan replaced Ron Silver, who was fired in Boston. I enjoyed it a lot too, and it had a marvelous physical production. I wish the reviews had been just a little more supportive. It was such a risky venture.

Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.

I seem to remember a lot of people in the business (including stars in other shows) starting a petition to keep it running. Those who loved the show REALLY loved it! Unfortunately there wasn't enough of them to keep the show running.
