Saigon's Salonga to Sing at Carnegie Hall

By Andrew Gans
11 Aug 2005

Tony Award winner Lea Salonga will make her solo Carnegie Hall concert debut this fall.

The official Carnegie Hall website says that Salonga - best known to Broadway audiences for her award-winning role as Kim in Miss Saigon - will perform at the famed venue Nov. 7 at 7 PM. The evening is a benefit for Diversity City Theater.

Lea Salonga burst onto the London and New York theatre scene as Kim in the international hit musical Miss Saigon. For her performance, she was awarded the Laurence Olivier, Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Theatre World awards. On Broadway she was also seen in another Boublil Schönberg musical, Les Misérables, as the ill-fated Eponine, a role she would later repeat in the concert video of the musical. Her
most recent Broadway appearance was in the revival of Flower Drum Song.

In her native Philippines, the singer-actress has appeared in
productions of Baby, Annie, The Sound of Mus ic, The Goodbye Girl, Paper Moon, The Fantasticks, My Fair Lady, Into the Woods, They're Playing Our Song and, most recently, Proof. On film, Salonga sang the female leads in the Disney animated films "Aladdin" and "Mulan" and has recorded several solo albums.

Glad to hear it. I wish there were more roles in the U.S. that suited her. Aside from her three Broadway shows, hasn't most of her career been in the Phillipenes?

re: Lea Salonga's Carnegie Hall Debut re: Lea Salonga's Carnegie Hall Debut re: Lea Salonga's Carnegie Hall Debut Yay!

I would say a majority of her career has been in the Phillipines. That and doing concerts all over for rediculous prices.

Thou giveth fever.

She is also quite well known in the UK because of Miss Saigon, Les Miserables ( onstage and in the concert version) and appearances in the Royal Variety Show, a command performance for the royal family.

Yes, she has appeared in many local productions here ( in Manila) because she was a child star ( ANNIE was her first stage appearance - and she has actually released an album of songs when she was a child star - her voice was already crystal clear then). I think she has also done some musical theatre in Singapore ( INTO THE WOODS - she played the role of the Witch if I am not mistaken).

Here's wishing her success on her Carnegie Hall debut!

I wish her all the success in the world and just hope she doesn't treat her Carnegie Hall audience as condescendingly as she has some other notable audiences.

I would trade everything just to watch her there in Carnegie! She deserves it and I know the whole broadway community is anticipating this concert. She IS Lea in anyways....

Okay, okay! Say it somehow...the beauty is, I have been changed for good!

Ourtime--is what ways has she been condescending to previous audiences?

i can kinda see how she can be condescending but i really don't think she is... she wants to form a rapport with the audience and it seems like she wants EVERYBODY to be included in on the stories but not everybody can... like when i saw her here in LA, i couldn't get all the Filipino references (and I'm Filipino)... I just felt like she tried to include me but couldn't and just ended up forgetting... did that make sense? oh well....
