Also, remember Audra has one four times...twice for featured actress in a musical and twice for featured actress in a play all within I think 10 years. Ragtime, Carousel, Raisin in the Sun and I've forgotten the fourth one.

I think the real competition will be between Curry and Norbert -- the rest are all gravy.
Here's what I think the X-factor will be: If John Lithgow is ALSO nominated (and he may very well be) and he pulls votes away from Norbert. (Granted: I think many people see this as Norbert's show -- but if its close, every vote counts. Remember, a vote for Lithgow is a vote for Curry.)

BEST LEADING ACTOR in a MUSCIAL
Hanz Azaria, SPAMALOT
*Gary Beach, LA CAGE AUX FOLLES
*Norbert Leo Butz, DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDREL
*Tim Curry, SPAMALOT
*Daniel Davis, LA CAGE AUX FOLLES
Raul Esparza, CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG
Cheyenne Jackson, ALL SHOOK UP
*John Lithgow, DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS
David Hyde Pierce, SPAMALOT
Thats CERTAINLY the list, but how the hell to pick is going to be one hard job, somebody is going to get the slight and it wont be pretty. You know I LOVE my LA CAGE, RIGHT NOW Im picking both of them but mainly because I havent Seen SPAM, CHITTY, or ASU yet - but if somebody should trump them (one or the other - I think DAVIS will get the nod over BEACH) I would gladly go with who is more deserving.
Although I have pleanty of reservations about RAUL in that role, and I do think that it is a possibility that Lithgow could not be nominated as well....at this point its just TOO HARD TO TELL!
As far as Dennis O'Hare, past actors playing the role have been considered SUPPORTING and have fared quite well. I think O'Hare and his producers would be smart to do the same.

"I think the real competition will be between Curry and Norbert -- the rest are all gravy."
I've seen this sentiment expressed quite often, and I'm not sure I quite understand it. Mind you, I *love* Mr. Curry, and have for more years than I care to admit, but it doesn't sound as if his role is nearly as much of a showcase for him as is Norbert's role in "DRS". I haven't yet seen either "DRS" or "Spamalot" (I'll catch "DRS" on 4/22 and "Spamalot" on 4/23), so in that sense I'm speaking from ignorance, but certainly "Spamalot" is much more of an ensemble effort. Are people assuming Mr. Curry's "name" will win him the award? That it will be a case of honoring a career, not just a performance? Or is there more to the role of King Arthur than I think?

This category was so much simpler last year...

Posted: 2/28/05 at 11:39pmYa, but last year you KNEW who was going to win the Tony in this category but the LEAD ATRESS category was the horse race. Kristen, Idina, Donna, Tonya (and Stephanie:)) and now we have a rather slow Actress category: Sutton, Victoria, (Christina?) and possibly Sherrie Rene depending on where they put her and a fifth slot filled by someone from DRACULA, ALL SHOOK UP, or GOOD VIBRATIONS (if Reinders goes lead)Oy! You know that category is hurtin, but yet ironically with some Bway greats of today! Its nice for a change to see the race among the men!

Don't get me wrong- I think it's great that we have so much competition this year, though it's kind of sad that worthy people will be left out. But better that than having to fill categories with mediocrities and worse because there's no other choice.
And there's no way I'm calling nominees or winners until I at least see some of the shows in question. :)

Posted: 3/1/05 at 2:21amOkay, while I agree everyone knew Hugh Jackman had it tied up last year, the other nominees were nothing to sneeze at. I thought they were all brilliant. Alfred Molina's performance gave me chills, John Tartaglia stole the stage at the Golden every night, Euan Morton's performance is still being discussed, and when is Hunter going to get his Tony?!?! I found them more merit- worthy overall than the Lead Actresses last year.

Posted: 3/1/05 at 2:53amI think last years' leading actresses were just as impressive and outstanding as the leading actors. I would say the weakest performance in both categories is that of the two winners, but what can I say. I strongly feel that Davis and Beach will be left out - as they should be. They're not very good.

You've made your feelings about La Cage clear from day one. Most folks don't agree with you. Davis definitely deserves a nomination. Unfortunately no one stands a chance against Norbert. All the talk goes to him.
I really don't understand the give here to Curry. I know everyone loves him but I've heard absolutely nothing impressive about his performance in Spamalot. I'm not knocking him - I'm just passing on what I've heard (primarily) about the role.
A click for life.
