Spamalot has NO names above the title. Which surprised me, honestly, given their name-recognition. I'm sure someone from that show will be leading, but if it's all three, and all three get nominations, who knows.
I would doubt Cheyenne getting a nomination. Maybe, if the Spamalot three don't tie up the category, there's a chance, but despite his good performance, I think it's a longshot.
Does anyone else think Raul has a shot in this category? At least when considering who may or may not be nominated.

If the Tony were for Best Looking Actor or most gratuitous removal of a shirt in a musical he'd be Tony-worthy for sure, but in terms of his performance? Hardly.
I hope some day he gets a role that really lets him shine as I have heard nothing but great things about Cheyenne, but his performance in All Shook Up was certainly nothing special. Personally, I think most of the supporting cast gave better performances.

I agree, I can't believe that's gone!
Even though SPAMALOT may not list the 3 names on the title page of the program, that harldy means anything. I don't understand those that think Pierce and Azaria are supporting - they DO more onstage than Curry.

Posted: 4/6/05 at 3:02pmI think Norbert will probably win, but also think Raul deserves a nomination.

Predictions:
-Norbert Leo Butz, DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS***winner
-Tim Curry, MONTY PYTHON'S SPAMALOT
-John Lithgow, DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS
-David Hyde Pierce, MONTY PYTHON'S SPAMALOT
-Hank Azaria, MONTY PYTHONS SPAMALOT
(Unless Pierce and/or Azaria arent considered leads, it looks like Spamalot and DRS are going to sweep this category)
Possible Others:
B.D. Wong- PACIFIC OVERTURES
Gary Beach- LA CAGE AUX FOLLES
Cheyenne Jackson- ALL SHOOK UP

Posted: 4/6/05 at 5:51pmAs much as I love Cheyenne and ASU (guilty pleasure), I don't think he'll get a Tony nomination. I don't think playing Chad will lead to a nomination/win. Hopefully next time he originates a role.

Chinkie Azn Jai, I don't understand this reasoning:
'Hopefully next time [Jackson] originates a role.'
'All Shook Up' is a new musical, so Jackson IS originating a role: Chad. He's not an Elvis impersonator.

Posted: 4/6/05 at 11:52pmUm...meaning, since he probably won't be nominated for this show, hopefully will next time he's part of an ORiginal Cast - MEANING...next time he's eligible. Not hard to figure out...

"Do you think B.D. has any legitimate shot at a nomination?
I personally loved him as the Reciter once I got used to his interpretation."
Uh . . . there was an "interpretation" in that performance? Because I didn't see it. I thought it was the easiest paycheck he ever got.

There's definitely a lot of actor interpretation involved in a role like the Reciter; he's a narrator. That's pretty ambiguous.
Priest! Where are ya?

Posted: 4/7/05 at 12:38amIf you didn't see the show, how would you know about whether or not an interpretation was possible and if in fact he had one?

Posted: 4/7/05 at 9:13amI saw All Shook Up and thought Cheyenne did a great job - Tony nominee worthy. Norbert did better though and will probably take it home.

Munkustrap178, thanks for clarifying that.
There were two ways to read: 'Hopefully next time he originates a role.' One was: The next time Jackson does a new role, I hope he'll be up for a Tony. I, however, misread it the other way and inferred that Chinkie meant that Jackson wasn't originating a role this time, but he hoped next time he would. My bad.

Posted: 4/7/05 at 4:28pmActually, there are rules regarding lead and supporting, above and below the title. They once were very strict, as with William Daniels getting a supporting nomination for 1776 which he turned down...Carlin Glynn and Henderson Forsythe as supporting winners tho the leads of Whorehouse, etc. Now the nominators are more forgiving, like the leads in Les Miz, etc...advertising is different now...not many names over the titles anymore.

Posted: 4/7/05 at 8:44pmPersonally I think it is going to be fun to sit back and watch how the Tony's play out. After last year's Vote Your Heart campaign debacle, I think most of the voters who are road presenters, etc (who also happen to make up a large percentage of votes, will be voting with their wallets this year.

In a perfect world, BD Wong would be nominated. But he won't.
Barring something earth-shattering, Norbert will win. Lithgow, Curry, Pierce and Esparza will likely round out the category.

But are we sure that Pierce will be considered a lead? When does the committee actually decide?
