Leading actor's salaries

Just an FYI from someone who has had to pay these salaries for cast album recordings -

VERY few people, whether in leads or not, are making 8-10K a week. It would surprise you, I think, to know how much people with well-known names make. Of course, name stars get what the traffic will allow - people like Channing, and Ann-Margret, and Matthew and Nathan, etc.

With very few exceptions, Broadway money is nothing to write home about in terms of leading player salaries. Nothing to sneeze at either, even if it's NOT 8-10K a week.

The disparity in Hollywood vs Broadway stars' comparative salaries may sound unfair but it is a matter of simple economics.

A Broadway star can only appear in one theater, grossing maybe over a $ 1 million per week. Movies can be screened simultaneously, worldwide, in thousands of moviehouses and revenues way outstrip what one Broadway theater can generate on a weekly basis.

I wonder how much salary they paid NEMO re: re: re: Leading actor's salaries Updated On: 8/26/03 at 09:07 PM

The lowest number someone mentioned is a lot of money for me! Does anyone know how much a lighting designer makes? (on broadway)

Well Nemo was an unknown clown fish who debuted in a dream role in a big budget film. I'm sure he made little above scale but hopefully the kid will get a good agent and make millions in his next movie. re: re: re: re: Leading actor's salaries

It does seem like a lot of money but bear in mind we are talking New York City rents, utilities, groceries, etc. Everything is extremely expensive here. Plus they have to pay union dues out of that and maybe a percentage to an agent.

Plus actors have to deal with long spots of unemployment so if they make a good salary when they are in a show, hopefully they can put a little aside that will help suplement their waiter salaries to pay the bills.

Amen to those expenses! Though I'm not an actor...I work with them and a small half decent 1 bdr. apt. in the city can easily go for $1,500 not incl. util. Most single actors have fewer bills than the 'married with children' actors.
And I beleive that about 5-10% of all Equity actors are currently working in shows on Bd'w or tours. Need some backing on the current % but it's not many, I can tell you.

So unless you take a lesson from the squirrel and store your nuts in the tree for winter....you can starve in about 2 years without a source of income. All that glitters get's rusty in time!

Back to how much these people make...

Rumor was Peters ( stars like Vanessa Williams) can make about 30-35K a week. I know that a big range. And with Sutton, she probably makes pretty close to the bottom salary for a title role. I'd say maybe 6-9K a week, maybe? I read somewhere that she did not get a raise when her contract was renewed. But then again I read that in the same articel that said instead of getting a raise they gave her her boyfriend in the role of Jimmy, and that's not how that happened. But that's a completely different story. Yeah, so I'm not too sure if she got a raise when her contract was renewed. And I'm apologizing ahead of time for being WAY behind on this.
