I'm not the least bit surprised, but am quite happy nonetheless. They're fantastic on Broadway, and I'm sure will be great on tour.

Work visa? I thought it's a green card. He's married to an American so he gets a green card, which lets him work in U.S. without any restriction (except working for a federal govement). So I think he is a member of U.S. equity now.

Yes it is true that his wife is an American. But, that doesn't fully mean she has her American citizenship anymore. According to the state department website if your an American citizen and your applying for citizenship in another country (Take Lee's wife going over to England) there is a chance that you might have to revoke your American citizenship in order to become an English citizen. It doesn't say how often that this happens or if it is something that happens more often the not. It just said that it does happen.

If it was the other way around and Lee moved to America to be with his wife then it might be as easy as he married an American citizen so he can get a green card. But, she moved to England and has lived there for a period of what I think is a few years at lest. Like I said there is the chance of her having to give up her American citizenship to get the citizenship of another country.

Since I was curious about dual citizenship issues, I looked up and here it is:

Loss of citizenship (INA § 349, 8 USC § 1481)
Section 349 of the INA [8 USC § 1481] specifies several conditions under which US citizenship may be lost. These include:

becoming a naturalized citizen of another country, or declaring allegiance to another country, after reaching age 18;

serving as an officer in a foreign country's military service, or serving in the armed forces of a country which is engaged in hostilities against the US;

working for a foreign government (e.g., in political office or as a civil servant);

formally renouncing one's US citizenship before duly authorized US officials; or

committing treason against, or attempting or conspiring to overthrow the government of, the US.

The primary effect of recent developments in the US regarding dual citizenship has been to add the requirement that loss of citizenship can only result when the person in question intended to give up his citizenship. At one time, the mere performance of the above (or certain other) acts was enough to cause loss of US citizenship; however, the Supreme Court overturned this concept in the Afroyim and Terrazas cases, and Congress amended the law in 1986 to require that loss of citizenship would result only when a potentially "expatriating" (citizenship-losing) action was performed voluntarily and "with the intention of relinquishing United States nationality".

So unless Gavin's wife voluntarily gave up (which I doubt) her US citizenship, she is still an American citizen thus Gavin has a green card.

This is great news! I will at least consider traveling some to see this show with both of these two in it. It sounds like a fun show.

Winston, just because an American lives in another country for a number of years doesn't mean they have to give up their American citizenship.

You are right that his wife didn't need to give up her citizenship in America to live in England.

But, in order to get a green card you have to be a resident of the United States for some period of time. I think that with all the time Lee has spent in NYC doing Poppins he has filled the requiered time. But, when he was starting here he was under a work visa because he didn't yet qualify for a green card.

First of all, ANYONE who is NOT an American Citizen is REQUIRED BY LAW to have a work visa if they wish to legally work here...even actors here on an Equity exchange. Even Hollywood celebrities who wish to work in the states have to have a work visa.

Also, merely living in a foreign country does not mean one has renounced his or citizenship. Third, marriage to an American citizen does not grant one automatic citizenship. If a non-citizen marries a citizen, they must apply, like everyone else, for naturalization. A work visa, on the other hand, is issued to non-citizens who wish to work here but NOT become citizens (though the ones who do wish to become citizens and wanting to work need one as well).
