I'm auditioning for Legally Blonde in a little over a week and am trying to choose an audition song. I'm an upper alto and looking for something to show off my belt as well. I'm hoping for Paulette or Vivian although I would honestly be happy with anything. A couple songs I am considering are:

All That Jazz - Chicago

I Will Prevail - Wonderland

Hold On - The Secret Garden

Somewhere That's Green - Little Shop of Horrors

Any input on what song I should choose or song suggestions would be much appreciated! Thank you!!

Somewhere That's Green fits Paulette the best out of those.

When I cast my production, the key for Vivienne was who could hit/belt the last note in Legally Blonde Remix, which I think is an A.  We called back three women - one refused to try to hit the note, we had the other two practice sliding up to it.  One of the two did it successfully - and we had our Vivienne.  So find a song with a high belt.  From Wonderland, I prefer the Mad Hatter song - since Kate Shindle belts it like crazy (well, she belts I Will Prevail like crazy too).  I don't know if it gets that high but it's got plenty of character for Paulette.   For Paulette, I was looking for more character - although we did cast a powerhouse for our Paulette who stopped the show with her belt at the end of Ireland.  .

Regardless, the auditioners likely will test your range.

Since you said you'd also love to play Vivienne, I'd pick something with enough of a belt that showcases that you can get up there, but still leaves room for the rest of your range for Paulette's sake. Find a song that you can nail every time, but don't go in there belting for your life. I can't think of any good songs as of now. All I can think of is Anything Goes and Gimme Gimme. I'll update this post if I think of anything else.

Most importantly, have FUN! LB is one of my favorite musicals and a great show to be a part of.

All That Jazz is a nice straightforward choice but I don't think it shows off much about either character.

Somewhere That's Green would be nice because you can show them how you would perform "Ireland." Don't get lost trying to copy Ellen Greene's voice though.

I think "Hold On" is actually a relatively smart choice. It's kind of advice-y like "Ireland" and sounds the most like it of your three choices. And you can belt it if you want.

I'm trying to think of something more comedic. The part of "I Know It's Today" from Shrek that I'm thinking of might be too high. "Donkey Pot Pie" from Shrek would let you have some of the sass (and riffs) from Bend and Snap but there isn't a clear solo part and I don't know how the music is arranged. Is "You'll Never Get Away From Me" from Gypsy too high? I don't know if "Gorgeous" from The Apple Tree is too high for you but you could belt parts of it and it could kind of show how you would play Paulette coming into her own in "Bend and Snap." "As We Stumble Along" from The Drowsy Chaperone would have nothing to do with anything but you could have a lot of fun with it. "What Was A Woman To Do" is probably too high and doesn't have a clear belting section. Is "How Can I Wait" from Paint Your Wagon too high for you? "It's a Perfect Relationship" from Bells Are Ringing? "Someone Woke Up" from Do I Hear a Waltz? The only other song I can think of is "Big, Blonde, and Beautiful" from Hairspray.

Why not sing "Ireland?"  Let them know what you're there for.
