Posted: 7/11/08 at 7:01pmI was watching a clip of the first San Francisco performance and was surprised that they had a short overture. (I thought it was horrible). I haven't seen the show live, so I wanted to ask, did they keep the overture that leads into "Omigod You Guys?"

I am finally registered here after trying for....oh, say....a year?
I think the "overture" is intended to get rear-ends in the seats. That is all. It has no musical value whatsoever...my opinion.

Posted: 7/11/08 at 7:25pmIt's on the Tony voters CD. It's about 45 seconds. It starts with the "Have you ever been in love?" music that pops up through out the show in different songs and then ends with the slower "Legally Blonde" melody.

Posted: 7/11/08 at 8:08pmThe Little Mermaid had one of the longest and most unnecessary overtures I've experienced.

Well, they changed part of the overture, then. In San Francisco, it sounded like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qL3okBf9oRU
The difference is 48 seconds in. It's just a five second part they cut before the start of Omigod You Guys.

Posted: 7/11/08 at 11:59pmI love the overture for Legally Blonde, even though it is so short. Lawrence has written some lovely melodies for the show. I find one or two rather haunting and it's nice to give the 19 piece orchestra a few moments of attention.
