Legrands West End Flop Returns!

Michel Legrands 1978 flop musical, 'The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg' is on its way back to the West End.
A brand new re-orchestrated version is being staged by the Curve Theatre Leicester in a co-production with Kneehigh, the company that had a brilliant success with 'Brief Encounter' in the West End & soon to take on Broadway.

'The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg' will be staged in Leicester as try out from 11th to 26th Feb 2011.

Adapted from the 1964 French film starring Catherine Deneuve and Nino Castelnuovo, the story centres on the doomed romance of young lovers Geneviève and Guy, which is interrupted by Guy's military service.

The new stage version will be directed by Emma Rice (Brief Encounter), with lyrics translated by Sheldon Harnick and design by Lez Brotherston.
The West End transfer will be produced by Daniel Sparrow and Mike Walsh productions, with casting and dates still to be confirmed.

A Shftesbury Avenue theatre is being looked at.

The 1978 production ran at the Phoenix Theatre for just 37 performances.
I saw a very empty Saturday matinee with around 30 in the whole place, I left in the interval.

Don't really know this show or the score (though I do know "I Will Wait For You" from the movie, which is a great song). But I love Legrand's music in general ("The Summer Knows", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "Windmills of Your Mind", the entire score of "Yentl", etc.). I even thought the music in Margueritte was beautiful (shame about the way past awful book and lyrics).

So this could be an interesting piece. And new English lyrics by Sheldon Harnick? Even more intriguing.

My favourite movie musical. I LOVE this musical. Another stand alone song from the score is Watch What Happens. Did the original London stage adaption come before or after the NY Public Theatre Production? Daniel Sparrow and Mike Walsh, I wish they would produce it here in Australia - their home!

'Bit confused if this is going to be a musical or play?'
The first clue is in the 5th word of the post!

Alright already.

I missed that, but have to check this out as it is a musical, however cannot be as bad as Paradise Found or yet even worse The Fantastics.

I just remember a stage full of about 3000 upside down umbrellas and little else.

If it's even half as good as Paradise Found or The Fantasticks it will be awesome (as they are two of the best things I've seen all year!).

love to agree with you Bob, but those two shows could bring a tear to a glass eye!

Just have to agree to disagree on this one, phantom. It's just a matter of different tastes in theatre and music. (The Fantasticks is full of absolutely brilliant songs IMO, including some that are genuine musical theatre classics - and Tom Jones's writing is pure genius, so many brilliant nuances in the text. I loved every second of the show each time I've seen it.) But in reverse, you enjoyed Love Never Dies and for me it was the most painful night of my life. LOL

As for "Umbrellas", it remains to be seen whether the show will be any good but at least I know I'll enjoy the music.

Legrands West End Flop Returns!

Out of Demy's musicals I always enjoyed The Young Girls of Rochefort better than Umbrellas. I worked with his widow Agnes Varda on her DVD box sets last year and she gave me some great insight on the making on both films. Catherine Deneuve, Gene Kelly, George Chakiris and even Grover Dale. What more could you ask for

Mama, would it surprise you to know that I too have that Laura Fygi CD? Many of the arrangements are the same that are used on the Kiri Te Kanawa Legrand album.

Not at all, I know that your taste is amazing!
I love Laura Fygi and have all of her CDs. She is varied in what she chooses to perform.
