With the reworking of Carrie recently, what are your thoughts about a new version of Legs Diamond?

Hugh Jackman?

It would probably meet with the same fate as the reworked Carrie.

Unless they drop a real bucket of blood on his head, forget it.

I doubt there will ever be a way to rework Legs Diamond that it will be successful.

But do have to say one of the most comical evenings I have ever had at the theatre.

All the best numbers were cannibalized into Boy From Oz already.

I believe the show had a very good score, the book needed work, and one of the big problems was its star- Peter Allen. Brenda Braxton and others of the cast have gone on the record as saying that no one was ever going to buy him as a gangster- even if he was trying to break into showbiz- he could sing the hell out of the songs, but it was laughable when he tried playing the romantic lead.

I do believe under the right guidance, and with a new book that this show could be a hit. You would need a star in the role of Jack, without a doubt, but it could be a hit show. I've got a fantastic copy of the closing night performance, and aside from Allen's inability to play it straight, the show had some really fun stuff in it.

On an episode of Theater Talk last year, book writer Harvey Fierstein said that he'd seen understudy Larry Kert perform the role, and that was the only time the show worked. I've seen it at the Lincoln Center archives, and there is a very entertaining show in there. It deserves an Encores! production.

I had no idea Larry Kert was the stand-by- I guess I should have read by program I got on eBay a few years ago a little closer! Of course with all the changes that were made during their incredibly long preview period to the cast it would have been hard to keep track!

Legs Diamond was one of the dullest nights I ever spent in a theatre. It didn't even fall into the it's-so-bad-it's-good category. It was just dull.
Julie Wilson was the only bright spot.

You know, no matter how long you polish that turd it's still a turd.

It's an ok idea but the book was hopeless and the creatives didn't deliver Peter Allen in the title role. He was asked to do things well beyond his range. The book was the greatest problem.
