In 1990, Tri Star Pictures (wow..remember them) won the rights to make the film version of the Miz musical with Alan Parker as director. It never happened.
As long as Jamie Lynn Spears is Epponine, all is right.
Roman Polanski would do a kick-ass Les Mis if he got the overload of violence out of it for just a moment.
i think though that the fan base would make the movie quite a bit of money. It wouldn't be a blockbuster success but i can see it doing better than phantom of the opera... But i just don't see it happening (though i have some really awesome images of it in my head)

"Well, Sweeney really didn't set the Box Office on fire, did it ?"
Box office doesn't really mean much in the way I see Sweeney. The movie is going to have legs. I can't tell you the random people-- my parents, siblings, friends, of all different ages, who NEVER would have sat down and watched a musical that boarders on opera like Sweeney. But because of Johnny Depp, they did, and discovered/some even loved it.
I think the same thing can be done with Les Mis.

My dream movie cast:
Valjean: Hugh Jackman
Javert: Kevin Kline
Fantine: Jennifer Garner or Kate Winslet
Marius: Jim Sturgess
Eponine: Ellen Page-she sang in Juno, and with a lot of voice lessons I think she could do it. Plus she could play the role like no other.
