I had the CD long before I saw the show on Broadway. It was pompous on CD and dreary on stage, in my opinion. The practically constant revolving stage had me dizzy. I walked out at intermission convinced this was a media hyped show of global proportions. Oh well.
Yours for a better Broadway!

Teacher & Bulldog~ I respect you both as savvy theater supporters and you are certaintly entitled dislike Les Mis , the stage production. It faded into a bit of disappointing show over the years, with the exception of the talents of J Mark McVey and a few others that still shined.
BUT... you cannot deny the fact that Les Miz, along with a few other hugely popular little shows, POTO and CATS, for better or worse in your eyes, are a few of the world's most popluar shows. Sure, there are a few others...but the fact remains that more people have seen and will continue to see POTO and Les Miz because they both remain two of "the world's most popular musicals". Doesn't matter if it wanders from the orignial, or the book or whatever things those who disike these two giants come up with. The general public loves (ed) these shows and flocked to them by the millions for many years. I have many favorites, these two are among them.
Not trying to start a controversary. Hey! I disliked "Contact" and "A Chorus Line". They were giants too. I wouldn't see either again, if you gave me a ticket. Just not my cup of tea!
Not sure of my point, but just wanted to get that off my chest. Thanks!

Posted: 11/15/03 at 3:33pmI think that the immediate future of movie musicals is very dependant on the fate of the POTO movie. If it is successful, it means that all these projects that are "in planning" might very well be made (Guys and Dolls,Sweeney, etc.) If it is not successful, than moviemakers might think that the success of Chicago was merely a fluke or that movie musicals are a big gamble and could be scared to make any more right now. POTO is certainly not my favorite show (nor my favorite version of Phantom) but for these reasons, I am praying for it's success.

PB, actually I would like to see Les Miz again, I have seen it twice already. Les Miz had some wonderful staging and some great musical moments.
It is a show that is very difficult to absorb and appreciate fully on first viewing unless you are familiar with the score. Les Miz can reap great enjoyment if you have had the chance to become familiar with the cd.
My slight frustration is with folks who recommend shows with great enthusiasm when in fact, they may not recall that they did not perhaps see the show "cold" or did not love it at first viewing, until they became familiar with the score. THIS happens often.
Theater folk often fall very much in love with a show after "making love" to the original cast recording. I have many, many times. This is great for us theater folk. I just hope all of us are sensible and thoughtful when recommending stuff out there to folks who may be less aware of, or less exposed to the theater scene.
When I first saw Les Miz it was shortly after it opened on Broadway. I was not familiar with the show or the score. I wish I had been:)

Teach~ Thanks for a decent reply! I agree with you about LM being a long, often confusing show at first shot. And that some get lost or bored. It's deep and dark. But it's still a favorite to many. Best to know the score, the story and the players.
I think the 10th Ann. Concert has helped people to know the show.
I've seen and loved Colm, but equally loved a few others as 24601's. Can you guess who :)? Sadly, it went down hill in recent years.
I don't think POTO on film will have any effect on the future of musicals to film. I won't judge what's not been finished. At least it will be a popular sell to those phans out there! I know I'll buy it, regardless if it's good or not. Let's put it next to my J&H video...No! I can't imagine it being that lame, hopefully. I do think Chicago was a lucky shot and nothing more! Again these are just my views.

Posted: 11/15/03 at 10:29pmI have to admit I loved the cast recording long before seeing the show. The anniversary show only added to my love of the music. To hear and see all the performers at once was a fantastic sight. I hope they do it again when it reaches twenty.

"Please, NO film of Les Miz. It's a text book example of what's deteriorated the state of musical theatre."
ok Bulldog, I have to ask: in your opinion, is there anything that HASN'T contributed to the "deteriorated state of musical theatre"? Im baffled, aren't there ANY shows on Broadway that you people can enjoy?
I have no comment on the origina ltopic =)

Well, Princess, so far this season I'd say WONDERFUL TOWN is about it.
I'll follow up after I see a few more shows.
Cheers, Bulldog
