Les Ms UK Tour heads to the Barbican

Its arrival will mark the first time that two productions of the same musical will run in the same city at the same time.

For some reason I have a burning desire to find another example and prove this statement wrong. Can anyone save me the effort? I can't believe it's never happened.

Les Ms UK Tour heads to the Barbican

The press release.

The new touring production of Les Miserables will play the Barbican Theatre (where it originally premiered in 1985) as part of the show’s 25th Anniversary celebrations, from 14 Sep to 2 Oct 2010.

This will be the first time anywhere in the world that two productions of the same musical are playing in the same city.

This new production opened in Cardiff in December 2009 and continued in Manchester, Norwich and Birmingham. Future tour dates include Edinburgh, Paris, Bristol, Salford and Southampton prior to this celebratory season at the Barbican in September.

This new production has new direction and new designs inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo, and stars John Owen-Jones as ‘Jean Valjean’, Earl Carpenter as ‘Javert’ and Gareth Gates as ‘Marius’.

This new production is directed by Laurence Connor and James Powell and designed by Matt Kinley inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo. Original costumes by Andreane Neofitou, additional costumes by Christine Rowland, lighting by Paule Constable and sound by Mick Potter.

A live cast recording of this production is due for release after Easter.

Les Miserables, played its 10,000th performance in the West End on Tuesday 5 Jan 2010.

Originally opening at the Barbican Theatre on 8 Oct 1985, the Cameron Mackintosh/Royal Shakespeare Company production transferred to the Palace Theatre on 4 December 1985 and moved to its current home at the Queen’s Theatre on 3 April 2004, where it is currently taking bookings to 26 Feb 2011.

When Les Miserables celebrated its 21st London birthday on 8 October 2006, it became the world’s longest running musical, surpassing the record previously held by “Cats” in the West End.

Les Miserables, which concerns Love and bravery in 19th century France during the revolutionary struggles, is written by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg, based on the novel by Victor Hugo. It has lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer and music by Claude-Michel Schonberg, with original text by Alain Boublil and additional material by James Fenton. It is adapted by Trevor Nunn and John Caird.

Les Miserables has been seen by over 56 million people worldwide in 42 countries and in 21 languages. There have been 34 cast recordings of "Les Miserables", including the multi-platinum London cast recording and the Grammy Award-winning Broadway cast and complete symphonic albums. The video of the 10th Anniversary Royal Albert Hall Gala Concert has sold well over one million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling musical videos in the UK.

Les Ms UK Tour heads to the Barbican

I saw Les Miserables when it played the Barbican back in 1985. Went in with no expectations (not a big Victor Hugo fan) and had a great evening. I haven't seen a production in a long time, and haven't bought one of the ten thousand cast recordings in longer than that. But I still have fond memories of Patti Lupone, Colm Wilkinson, and Frances Ruffelle's performances that evening.

This newly designed touring production is now planning a U.S tour for spring next year.
Place your bets for that 'Les Miz' will get a third Broadway season pretty soon.

Glad to see it's heading home. Personally, I think this version's better than the original. Great cast.
