re: 'Lestat' - Live Forever or Die Now!

is the fact that the San Fran Chronicler said the director has been canned a rumor or truth. is that paper like the NY Post?
The "person" brought in is Jonathon Buttrell, the very talented Musical Stager of the revivals, NINE, and Fidd;er on the Roof and he also did Light In The Piazza and See What I Wanna See.
Anyone know the "truth"?

We should be hearing back in another hour or two so we shall see something then. I cannot wait to hear what has went on at the Curran tonight and glad we have at least 2 posters there who will give us their impressions.

re: 'Lestat' - Live Forever or Die Now!

I saw the show today, after previously having seen a very early preview (in the "Jack Noseworthy days"). Drew Sarich amuses me as he kind of rocks out and goes all super-evil, which at least is interesting.

Overall, it's... better than it was. (But that's not saying a whole lot.) Some of the more repetitious scrims and voice-overs have been altered or removed. Hugh Panaro is no longer using the weird accent he had previously. Some dialogue that makes various scenes a bit clearer has been added.

None of this changes the fact that Act I and Act II still seem to come from entirely different shows (and Act I is boring), and the very end scene is still ridiculous (if slightly less so than before). I understand that a whole lot of work will be done on Act I and that the final scene will most likely change (I think they're dropping the whole Enkil and Akasha angle, which seems like a good plan to me) in NY.

The actors are still excellent, and I hope there are re-writes that actually give them material worth performing to the level I know that they can perform.

Thanks for the update Shawk! Now we are waiting for LizzieCurry and justme2 I believe. I really thank you all for the reports and your impressions.

I'm glad Hugh got rid of that accent. It drove me nuts and I eventually tuned him out. Unless they fix the score, there is no use fixing the rest of it because the score is pretty awful, except for two songs. The rest are snooze inducers!

I have a feeling Elton is writing as we type. Just a hunch, LOL!

re: 'Lestat' - Live Forever or Die Now!

OK..I saw the 2pm today. First off, we had to buy scalper tickets as the show was SOLD OUT. I guess word got around that Elton was here today?! We were quite surprised to be told that there were no seats left in any section, and sheepishly ended up purchasing two tix for $140. Not bad!

We lucked out with row D Orchestra (fantastic seats). What a difference 50 or so rows make! Whereas before I had a lot of issues with the sets...this time they looked fine to me. The acting was great, and all leads and supporting actors once again impressed the audience. No standing O, but lots of applause for Carolee and Amy (Claudia).

The show has not changed much since the December 10th show. I noticed some dialogue changes regarding Nicholas and his fate, and there was one or two blocking changes. But that was it. Like Shawk said earlier, act one and act two are still coming off as two different shows, story and music style wise. I hope the writers can the Enkil and Akasha storyline as well. It doesn't seem to add anything to the show.

What changed most was my opinion of the show. I ended up enjoying it much more this time, and I credit that to being so much closer to the action. It still is a show in much need of some story tightening, and I hope Carolee is given a bit more to do in NY.

By the way, Panero is quite the spitter, isn't he? We were watching the front row flinching as some sizable spitwads made their way over the footlights!

Oh, and no Elton sighting at the Matinee.

re: 'Lestat' - Live Forever or Die Now!

I was also at the matinee (I know, it's midnight now, but give a girl a break re: 'Lestat' - Live Forever or Die Now! ).

Don't think I have too much more to add, other than I disagree with justme2 in that "not much has changed" -- I think the changes were significant and obvious, or maybe I'm crazy observant, or just crazy.

I saw the show shortly after you did, justme2 (and wasn't 12/17 the first preview? How'd you go on 12/10?), and there have definitely been changes... in Lestat's first entrance (different song and blocking); Lestat and his dad's argument (I think); Nicolas' making; dialogue in at least two of the scrims (no more of the awful "Pain and pain and pain" and "Every bone in my body" or something); Nicolas not being there anymore in "To Live Like This;" different choreography for "Welcome to the New World" andn "To Kill Your Kind;" and obviously the finale.

Act 1 has definitely been tightened, but it's still episodic and rather unengaging. The element of caring about the characters is trying to burst out (ya know, like Anne Rice's words, from her brain to the page, which need no editing at all, ever). But isn't there.

You hardly know Lestat when he gets his first big angsty solo ("The Thirst"), so who cares that wah wah his daddy hated him, wah wah he killed wolves and wah wah now he's a vampire? Certainly not me, and it wasn't the fault of Hugh Panaro. He's still doing the best he can, but an actor can only go so far when the material is shoddy.

Some of the comedic spots in Act 2 are definitely better. But something needs to be done to wake up the audience earlier than "I Want More," which is about 15 or so minutes into Act 2. They were all eating it up and it seemed like most people were glad there was a number with a fun melody and something you were supposed to laugh with, not at.

re: 'Lestat' - Live Forever or Die Now!

Wait...what changed other than dialogue? I was watching closely, too and didn't notice any new songs, or new scenes. I did notice that they seemed to be mentioning Nicholas going into the fire, and I didn't remember that from the last time.

Oh, and I seemed to remember that when Gabrielle and Lestat go into the underground church, someone was in a cage (was it Nicholas?).

What else?? In the words of Claudia..."I want more, more, more, more..."

re: 'Lestat' - Live Forever or Die Now!

I just went back to pull my program and check on the date..I knew it was a Tuesday and it was before Christmas. It was one of those ticketmaster "print your own" tix, and I think I tossed it. It had to be the Tuesday on the week before Christmas week, whatever the hell that date was!

Anyway..I know the choreography for New World looked the same to me, right down to the canes and the walking around, then stopping for the chorus of the song. And the "Kill your Kind" was the same, because I remember thinking how lame it was to have them stamping their feet while cornering her. Also, the killing effect in that scene actually worked right this time. Last time the curtain got caught on her chair and kinda ruined the effect.

What looked different to me was when he and Nicholas arrive in Paris. I thought the costumes were different from last time, but wasn't sure if it was just more noticable because I was closer.

I mentioned the different blocking in my earlier post, I noticed that right away. What was different in the finale for you? It was the same for me, he still had to crawl up those steps and it was the same two ancient ones, and all the "family" on either side.

EDIT for sudden memory - Noseworthy was already out of the show when I saw it.

re: 'Lestat' - Live Forever or Die Now!

The finale? Well, Marius carries Lestat to the stairs, that's for sure. And Enkil and Akasha are higher up on the stairs than before. When I saw it the first time, Lestat didn't crawl, and Marius wasn't so insistent that he use his own strength to up that high. Also, Akasha exposed her breast to him, not her wrist, as it's done now.

The stomping seemed quieter in "To Kill Your Kind." And it was more obvious (to me, anyway) that they were going to do Death by Sunbathe. I couldn't tell what they were doing the first time I saw it.

I have a TV clip somewhere of opening night coverage and compared to that, some of "Welcome to the New World" looked different to me, but I can't name what specifically was changed.

CurtainPullDowner, the Examiner -- not The Chronicle -- mentioned the director being canned, and while the Examiner does tend to be superficial and tabloidy, I don't think it's quite like the Post.

The Examiner wasn't always like that, but it's a long story. Click the link and scroll down.

re: 'Lestat' - Live Forever or Die Now!

It was JANUARY 10th when I saw the show...I just checked my review on the "other site" for the date!!

This is why it looks so much different to you, but not to me. It's only been two weeks since I saw it!

I saw WC that week in Dec.

re: 'Lestat' - Live Forever or Die Now!

Oh, and in response to jimmirae earlier, I don't think Elton will be writing any new songs. Unless he does it in New York.

By the way, enjoy that lovely rain after the show, Lizzie? It made getting out of the city a nightmare!

It wasn't too bad. Hung around at Starbucks for a while and then went to BART. It helped to get away from the crowd. :)

re: 'Lestat' - Live Forever or Die Now!

Thanks to you both for the info. I wasn't assuming Elton would be putting in new songs before NY, Just that he must be busy by command of Warner Brothers to get to it. Can you imagine someone telling him "Get To It", LOL!!!

re: 'Lestat' - Live Forever or Die Now!

I'm hoping that the Stage Door isn't too nuts tomorrow... I mean they're not in too big a rush to move sets out (as they would be if they had another city to open in 3 days, like tours)...

I want to get the chance to congratulate the cast. Wish them luck. And ask a few questions.

Also, if this musical does get some major revamping, there might be a chance of some comings-and-goings of current cast members (look at Noseworthy).

*sigh* I guess when everything is in perspective, it sure is bumming... no matter what the show...

re: 'Lestat' - Live Forever or Die Now!

I actually heard that the director, Rob Roth, has NOT been canned, but that Jonathan Butterel is being brought in as an additional consultant to work on the show, like a true "show doctor" of old. How much Roth actually continues to do on the show remains to be seen, but he's not been fired.
#71

re: 'Lestat' - Live Forever or Die Now!

sorry 'bout that lizzie
and I did read it and someone else close to the show said Roth has been canned.
The changes you guys have reported don't seem like the kind to save a Bomb.
And if Elton hasn't even showed up yet, what does that mean?
The Drama is just overwhelming.
I quess the decisions will be made once this show ENDS in SF.

re: 'Lestat' - Live Forever or Die Now!

>>>ummmmm...why can't a Vampire musical work again? I mean, not talking about this show in particular, just in general. Is there some logical reason?

Because two major vampire musicals with huge budgets flopped. I was just surprised that producers were willing to take on another one.

re: 'Lestat' - Live Forever or Die Now!

Er, Elton John supposedly saw the show on Friday. I seem to recall reading in some UK paper previously that he'd been requested to write new songs even before this.

Having also seen the show waaaay early in previews, I have to say that the choreography to "Welcome to the New World" and "To Kill Your Kind" is different-- less freeze frame in the first and less violent stomping in the second (which helps but not a whole lot).

re: 'Lestat' - Live Forever or Die Now!

Apparently, Elton was at the theatre on Sat night.

justme2, were you at the center orchestra row D? I was at row F and during the intermission two or three ladies were standing around row D discussing about the show and was wondering if that person was you.

It was my first time seeing the show and I thought the whole show was boring. I wish I were a Hugh fan, then at least I would enjoy watching him on the stage 90% of the time.

re: 'Lestat' - Live Forever or Die Now!

I know who you are talking about, and that wasn't me. That group was about 4 ladies in their 50's right? I was listening intently to them to see if I could figure out their connection to the show. We never could. They were also talking about "writing a letter" to the management of the theater about something.
