Posted: 7/7/07 at 5:24pmLuPone should have had the role of Joanne in this past Company revival. I mean, watching that show I couldnt help but think Doyle was directing Walsh with Patti in mind.

"Leslie Kritzer is Patti Lupone in Patti LuPone; the Musical"? Can I have my opening night tickets now please?
And, PalJoey, I am reminded of "Citizen Kane."

She is such a horrible woman, if only Webber had given "Evita" to someone else, it would have saved the rest of us listening to that paint peeling, kitten killing voice of hers!

Posted: 7/8/07 at 3:13amHAH, rosscoe that gave me a good laugh. She has such a sense of entitlement for just another broadway actress who happens to be beloved by many because she is tough as nails and loves to be this onstage persona.

Please, if you want to see someone crap their way through Evita, rent the movie.

She's so tiresome.
I enjoyed EVITA, but I've enjoyed other things, as well.
She certainly isn't the be-all-and-end-all of theatre.
Rudeness is rudeness - call it divadom if you like. I have no patience for anyone who carries on like this.

I thought the Laurents quotes were the most interesting part of the article although it is amazing that LuPone has not originated a role in a new musical in NY since 1979!
I attended an interview she gave several years ago and while it was nice that she talked candidly about things, her responses very much leaned toward the negative – what she didn’t like about Hal Prince, what mistakes Mamet made, why that experience was unpleasant, etc. I knew a couple of other people who attended and one of them commented on how she certainly “carried her baggage around with her” and another was completely turned off by her attitude. I just thought is was sad that one of the few musical theater performers who had managed to make a name for themselves didn’t seem to much enjoy or appreciate that fact..
When she was recently quoted as saying that she wasn’t jealous of other people but of their opportunities, I wondered how she could ignore the part she herself played in limiting her opportunities. After Evita, she performed at a major event for an arts organization and one of the people involved with the group said she behaved so deplorably that to this day he won’t go see anything she’s in, and it took more than a dozen years, I think, for anyone to present her in that area again. Even recently, I was talking with someone whose partner works with a company that was dealing with her as she was demanding this and that. At one point she threw a tantrum and said she wasn’t going to do the show and then called back an hour later saying she would. Apparently, once she arrived she was fine, at least in terms of rehearsal performance things.
Hopefully Gypsy will be well-received and she’ll have more positive comments to add to those of her Sweeney experience. I like to root for the Broadway divas, even though some of them can make it difficult at times.

Uh, right. Look: reality cheque time, okay? Yes, she has a better voice than most, but the woman cannot act her way out of a paper bag without a road map from AAA. She takes the easy way to a character's centre and sticks with that, no matter how facile or understated it might be... and as a result, there's nothing under the performance, just more of the Lupone sameness.
She's just a run of the mill diva, and as I've pointed out before, I wonder if these self-placed divae really know the gift they've been given when there are hundreds of people out there who can sing better (and, in her case, act better) *and* have far better personalities to boot. The only thing they dont have is the PR machine, which is about the only thing Patti *does* have over everyone else. I've heard the stores about her tantrums over the years, and I swear I've wanted to bitch-slap her and then ask (rhetorically) "Who the &^*% do you think you are, woman? Just because you can open your yap and sing a song doesnt make you worth this kind of BS."

Patti is one of Broadway's biggest divas.
She has an amazing voice and most certainly can act, as proven by her 4 Tony nominations.
Many people dislike her because of good old fashioned sexism. She is a strong, decisive woman who knows what she wants. I know that many arent used to these traits in a woman but still, that is not a reason to dislike her.
Say what you want, but she has proven herself time and time again. When you can sell shows based solely on your name, maybe then you will understand her entitlement.

As if a Tony nomination really means anything. Yeah, and the Oscar for Best Picture *always* goes to the very best Hollyweid can offer and the Emmys go to the *very* best TV can trot out.
The woman cannot act. She proved it in SWEENEY (which was a borderline dreadful copy of Lansbury) and on TV (Her turn on Ugly Betty could have done better by half a dozen character actresses). Yes, she can sing, but y'know, so what? So can a lot of other people. She's just a name, nothing more, and she became a name by pretty much tenacity alone. And tenacity does NOT equal talent by any stretch.

To say her Mrs. Lovett was a "borderline dreadful copy" is laughable. I mean she practically re-invented the role in this past revival. Perhaps you didnt see the same show I did.
