The next step is picking out a theater to rename. But I don't think that this'll happen until 2070.

Give her the Imperial! That was where she was doing "Call Me Madam" and threw the rowdy drunk SOB out on to the street, that's how Stritchie told it. By the way, I say we take the Neil Simon and make it the Elaine Stritch as well, and Neil wont mind, he's had it a long time already, LOL!

I think they should rename the Broadway Theater after Ethel Merman for a couple reasons. I think theaters that aren't named after someone are boring, like the Broadway or Majestic, and I don't think they should rename a theater that has already been named after someone, while they have theaters that aren't named after anyone.
Plus, the Broadway theater is where Ethel Merman opened in Gypsy, which according to the article was one of the best Broadway performances ever.

Well, if the Shuberts would rename theatres after theatrical legends and not their former executives, she might have a theatre already.
Her major shows were at The Broadway, the 46th Street Theatre (now The Richard Rodgers), The Alvin (now the Neil Simon), The Imperial and the Majestic. They should leave the Rodgers and Simon names alone. I can't imagine that there'd be a lot of people upset at renaming The Broadway for her. Since it's one of the biggest musical houses on Broadway, it would be appropriate.

Annie Get Your Gun: The Imperial
Gypsy: the Broadway
Where were all of the other shows?
The Broadway or the Imperial would be great!

Does anyone know how to begin a grassroots campaign to get a theater named for Ethel?
She deserves it!

I never said that I disagreed that it should be done, I only said it takes a lot of time.

I vote that she get the Imperial except they may have to also change the name on the Les Mis plaque, otherwise, it'd be a good choice. It's not named for anyone yet.
If Percy Blakeney were in Les Mis....
Percy: Sink me! If it isn't Javvurt!
Javert: Zsah-vair, it's pronounced Zsah-vair.
Pecry: But it's spelled J-A-V-E-R-T Javvurt.
Javert: Repeat after me Zsah...Zsah....
Percy: Oh! Zsa-Zsa! Like the Gabor sister! Well I personally have always prefered Eva.
Javert: (Looks for gun)

The LES MIS plaque won't be there very much longer. Those plaques are removed when another show surpasses their performance record. There used to be plaques outside the St. James (Where HELLO, DOLLY!
broke the performance records of the time) and at the Broadway Theater (where FIDDLER was playing when it became the longest running show of its time). LES MIS will soon be eclipsed by PHANTOM.

I vote the Imperial. I remember reading she haunts it. I think it isn't true though.

The Les Mis plaque commemorates the 10th Anniversary, NOT a record number of performances. There's no reason it can't stay.

Wait-Les Miz was never the longest running show on Broadway. It was A Chorus Line; then Cats; and Phanton in January.

I like Mermadome.
The Mermarama.
Loud Hall.
Or in a joint christening with Mary Martin, how about:
Mermartin.
Marmin.
Marethel.
Ethy Marmin.
I need a drink now, because it sounds like I've already had one.

Mary Martin is, no doubt, worthy of recognition also.
The plaque at the Imperial for Les Miz has nothing to do with the name of the theater, or the longest running broadway musical.
I am investigating setting up and online petition.
