Why does the Phantom insist on Raoul keeping his hands at the level of his eye? I never caught that. I'm in the middle of reading the novel of Phantom, but I'm only in the middle of it.

The Phantom strangles Bouquet and Piangi with his Punjab Lasso, and 'keep your hand at tle level of your eyes' is to prevent him to get the noose around one's neck.
Mdme Giry: "those who speak of what they know find to late that prudent silence is wise. Joseph Bouquet hold your tongue. Keep your hand at the level of your eyes."
In the book it explains that keeping your hand at the level of your eyes allows you to undo the noose that would be around your next before he strangles you.
well, if its the phantom telling him, its more like mocking... it's giry's advice to keep your hand at the level of your eye to avoid being caught by the punjab lasso. if your hand is up, its in the way of the lasso catching your neck... make sense?
yeah i caught that at the show before i read the book which was clearer about that "level of your eye" phrase. they should mention it at least one more time in the show for the audience to fully grasp it...
That's right! That's always what I thought it meant when I saw the movie and heard the soundtrack, but I just wanted to verify it with "the experts." Thanks guys. Now I won't have to concentrate on that when I see the show next month.
Is it a good cast right now?
i saw it a year ago and i loved the cast... you'll find MANY hugh panaro fans here
Not too many people are fond of the Christines, however. (Sandra Joseph and Julie Hanson). Moreso Sandra than Julie, though. There are only oddballs like me who don't enjoy her.

Aigoo- I have actually heard A LOT more people who like Julie better than Sandra. I saw Julie and loved her. To each his own.

What bugs the hell outta me is that there was time for Madame Giry to add her line from the stage show...
GIRY: ...remember, your hand at the level of your eyes!
RAOUL: But why?
GIRY: Why? The Punjab lasso, monsieur. First Buquet, and now Piangi!

I forgot about that! They really should have done that!
I think you misunderstood. I meant to say that people dislike Sandra moreso than Julie. Although, there are still oddballs like me who don't even enjoy Julie. From what I've heard though, I'm sure it was just an off night.

Sorry, Aigoo. I misunderstood.

aigoo...you can't have an "off night" on broadway...or at least I don't think great performances should. that's jsut my opinion.

That's right, cathyhyatt, because Broadway performers aren't the same as regular human beings. They don't have emotions and aren't prone to having bad days (and consequentially, off nights).
Yes. It all makes sense now.
To clarify things, I personally didn't like her. But everyone is in LOVE with her. Many people tell me that I was lucky to see her perform, but as far as I'm concerned, her pitch was off the entire night, her acting was mediocre (for the little part of acting there is), and chemistry wasn't so great with the rest of the cast. So. In conclusion, I put that she had an off-night for the rest of the citizens of BWW, so they don't think I'm some mean, cruel person.
Cudia and Panaro are gods, however.

mythus-- maybe your not a performer but I sure as hell am and haven't you ever heard "leave your baggage at the door"
if your having a bad day you CAN'T let it effect your performance. ESPECIALLY on broadway..one performance there are hundreds of people there...you never know who could be in the audience.
performers need to leave the personal lives behind...of course everyone has not so wonderful performances but it shoukldn't be a drastic change...the BEST performers let there characters emotions shine through and not their own.
that;s what I meant.

I am a performer, thank you for assuming I'm not. Even if you are terribly skilled at becoming your character and checking your emotional baggage at the stage door, the actor's mood can subconsciously effect his or her performance.
Broadway performers are humans. Humans are not perfect. Deal.

ye sit def. can...that's what i said. But you can't be TOTALLY off in your performance is what I'm saying. For example...a performer who is amazing and may have an off night will still appear to have made a great performance. But a performer who is just medicre may be okay one night and terrible the next and great the next. All I'm saying is you HAVE TO BE CONSISTENT. Please tell me you at least agree with that.
i saw sandra... i don't think she was all that bad

Or you might just suck in the role.
I saw Sandra Joseph. I didn't like her at all.
And Julie Hanson (Christine Alternate) needs to be recast immediately. The woman has no sense of pitch whatsoever. The voice is just toneless and unpleasant. My ears are still recovering from watching the show from over 3 weeks ago. Thank heaven for Hugh Panaro's vocals.
HAH! Told you! Her pitch IS awful!

I'm gonna have to agree with Mythus that you can have an off night. Everyone does. Whatever you "should or shouldn't do" is irrelevant. The fact is that everyone has off days. Maybe you're a little bit sick or something really bad happened that day.

Is teh lasso given more 'time' in the show? I mean, in the movie it really wasn't, but when I read teh book I understood the 'Level of your eyes!' bit.
