Lewis Black - Black to the Future

I was there last night too.

Wasn't a fan of Running on Empty. Thought the topics were too scattered and the rants about technology, texting, etc made him just seem like an angry get off my lawn type.

Black to the Future was much, much better; the election and politics are much better targets for Black's exasperation and rage. He addressed right off the bat how difficult it has been to mine comedy from this election series because, as he pointed out, everyone has 300 Trump jokes of their own and the people in politics are such walking satires themselves that there's no comedy to write. He discussed how Sarah Palin made a speech and then Tina Fey went on SNL and read the speech verbatim. Comedy writers have nothing to do. He claims we are currently living at the intersection of reality and satire- living in a completely fictional world.

Despite this preamble, Black was able to get some pretty good laughs out of the elections and even some tense, serious digs at Trump.

The funniest part of the evening was when he read an article about a German woman who robbed a drugstore in a rather hilarious way (I won't spoil it here). I was laughing so hard I had to look away from Black and start thinking about something else so I could catch my breath.

Of course in a 90 minute comedy set there are going to be a few patches that don't land with you, but these moments were far and few between I thought.

Overall it was a great night and if the Tony committee ever brings back the Special Event Tony this would be a prime candidate for nomination. Definitely recommended.

I watched the stand up special for this on Comedy Central and they added what sounded like laugh tracks which brought the humor of the show to negative 1000. It was not worth my time.

otherwise it was cool looking at the marquis theatre and on your feet set.
