I don't know if this is old news or not, but I've found the Light in the Piazza license. It's currently restricted.

Sorry again, if this is old news.

Not to condescend, but it wouldn't take a genius to figure out that Rodgers & Hammerstein would control the rights. The composer is, after all, Richard Rodgers' grandson.
it's also listed in the Piazza playbill
interesting how it actually says "There are no musical numbers in The Light in the Piazza." ...

I would want to do the show just to try and get the video from the archives! I know that sounds awful, but I definitely don't want to do the show at my school... I don't know how many will be interested, probably geared more towards opera houses and regional theatre... at least, I hope.

there is no highschool aged boy who could ever be fabrizio. i just can't imagine someone talented enough to learn italian and sing those crazy hard songs. this will definitely be for regional theatres and opera houses.
I could even see regional theatres shying away from it. they'd have to find actors who already speak/sing Italian or pay someone to teach them... how much is that gonna cost?
Fabrizio is the character you're worried about high school kids being able to play? I'm sure there are a number of guys who could pull it off. I think that it would be infinitely more difficult for a high school age girl to effectively play Margaret, due not only to her age, but all of her complexities and emotions.
you're right. no way. not many or any highschoolers could play fabrizio's father or mother either. and i don't know any teen girls who could sing franca's part. haha. this show will never be done in a high school. i'd put money on it.

I was thinking more along the lines of Margaret Johnson... well, actually, I don't think high-school students could pull off any of the parts in the show. Fabrizio, Franca, Clara are all really hard roles. And then, of course... there is speaking Italian and being able to pull off a convincing accent when speaking english.
I know of some high school kids that could pull it off. Granted, they're extremely talented, but it's not as big of a challenge to find someone like that as you make it out to be. The older characters are another story. Granted, very difficult to play/sing, but I bet there will be some really crazy high school theatre director who will do the show. It probably won't be very good, no matter how talented the kids are, but I'll bet it will be done. I wouldn't think Assasins would be done in high school, but it is.
Italian isn't that hard to learn. I've had to do it for several contest pieces, and it's easy to pick up on (I didn't know exactly what I was saying the whole time, but oh well). But I agree with you, I think most (if not all) of the roles could never be pulled off by high schoolers (and I wouldn't want to watch them try).
I wouldn't mind seeing a college put it on, or a REALLY fantastic group of older high school students.
