I don't race is the underlying factor as much as no Latin roots. I have plenty of friends who I just thought were African-American at first glance but also turned out to be Dominican or Cuban in heritage. The show is a lot about roots of the characters and Corbin just does not seem to fit into anything to do with the character of Usnavi except for the purpose of box office appeal.
