Lin-Manuel raps his approval of Corbin Bleu

Posted: 12/9/09 at 1:07pm

I'm sure talent-wise he is great and I think it's wonderful that Lin-Manuel is backing him 100%, but...

Corbin. Is. Black.

It makes no sense.
Check it out.

No Lin-Manuel rap will make the horrible decision of casting Corbin Bleu seem any better.

*sigh*

A lot of Dominicans are black or have negroid features (i.e. A-Rod, David Ortiz, Pedro Martínez). The Dominican Republic does share an island with Haiti, you know.

BTW: Where were you when Scary Spice played Mimi on Broadway?

I never saw an original thread about it. Calm down. Why do people always gripe about "clogging up the boards?" It's not like there's a space limit.

How ironic that the comment about my ego came from someone whose username is MusicSnob.

Call me a purist and maybe it's because I've worked in casting and am pursuing it as a career, but...I'm just not a fan of this casting decision.

I'm not either, mywonder.

I have nothing against you - just being the snarky snob that I am!

And Arielle Jacobs is on the tour. She's Russian/Dutch/Jewish/Polish/Filipino.

WHERE WAS YOUR OUTRAGE WHEN THAT WAS ANNOUNCED, HUH?!

Usnavi is Dominican. Most Dominicans have African roots and, like Stagemanager2 said, "have negroid features." What's the problem?

All the more reason for you to broaden your horizons, learn a little from the humanity and integrity Lin-Manuel puts into his work and his life, and take some responsibility for your unacknowledged racism.

re: Lin-Manuel raps his approval of Corbin Bleu

While Arielle Jacobs may be those things...she LOOKS Latina/Spanish/Dominican and can easily pull it off based on her looks.

And yes...Dominicans have African roots, I get that. But, I think there are certain limits that should be expected. The character of Usnavi raps about his father arriving and seeing "US Navy" on the side of a ship when he came from the D.R. I just think looks are important in shows that deal with ethnicity so not to confuse the audience or someone who has never seen the show before.

And the rest of the entire cast looks Latin/Spanish/Dominican...I don't think it'll mesh well.

The way some of you are carrying on, it's as if Corbin Bleu looks Nordic.
Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.

Which makes it make sense EVEN MORE. When I think "Dominican," I think of people who look like Pedro Martinez, the Alou brothers, and Jose Vizcaino, and I don't see how Corbin Bleu doesn't count.

mywonderwa11: You do realize that Latinos come in ALL shades?

Incidentally, what's your opinion of Audra McDonald in 110 IN THE SHADE?

Yes, I know that Latinos come in all shades. I apologize for coming off racist because, well...I'm not at all.

I'm not the first and only person to disagree with this casting decision. It's just my opinion.

Calm down everyone.

PalJoey - Unacknowledged racism? Really? haha Pretty ridiculous

No, but you're the first to start a thread about your objection, accompanied by a potentially contentious reason.

Alright, well...my intention wasn't to start a thread so that I had an outlet to only discuss my own objection. I wasn't expecting people to freak out on me and call me racist haha

And I wasn't trying to be contentious or start any quarrels. I'm just stating my opinion on the matter.

I think it's funny that to demonstrate how 'good' Corbin Bleu is Miranda uses his own (apparently) irreplaceable talent, maybe giving some people even more reason to believe Corbin isn't the right choice.

Give me claws and a hunch, just away from this bunch.

This is the guy folks have trouble seeing as Usnavi?

I disagree with those who believe Corbin Bleu shouldn't have the role because he's black, but I do think it's unfortunate that the only Latino leading actor role on Broadway won't be played by a Latino. I guess we should be grateful they haven't recast the West Side Story Sharks yet as "Latino looking" since speaking Spanish isn't a requirement anymore.
