this is a pretty god article on the library. some of the titles have restrictions placed on them by the producers (or whoever owns the rights) and require written permission to view.
Thanks PAPA
Thanks! I'm an acting student. I ownder if that means I could view if I was working or studying one of the shows they have.
Do you need to be a NY resident to get the Access card? I'm looking at the online application and wondering about the question that asks if I "reside, work, attend school, or own property in New York State". If I say no, can I still get the card?
I'd be happy to pay if they wanted.
Thanks
i guess as a 14 yr old boy, i dont have much of a case do i?
You don't have to be a New York resident. But you have to have a valid reason for wanting to view the tapes. I got an access card the other day and when I went to watch the tape, I had to fill out yet another form on WHY I needed to see it.
" Viewing is restricted to students, theatre professionals and researchers at the Library, mostly by appointment. We arrange both individual and group screenings - sometimes for a large drama or theatre arts class or the entire cast of a show eager to review its own work.
Last year we had almost 5.000 viewers from 43 states and 26 foreign countries: playwrights, actors, dancers, scenic, costume, lighting and sound designers; producers, directors and choreographers; editors, lyricists, composers, conductors, music and drama critics; screenwriters, music publishers, stage managers, and dance captains, and film and television producers wanting to adapt a play to another medium...""
This is a quote from the link papa just gave you. The article goes into details as to what's available and why some shows are not in the archives.
You can imagine the amount of people that try to trump up an excuse to "get in" to see a free Broadway show...which in unfair to those with valid reason to be there.
So, yes you will need to "qualify" to see the tapes. Your school or affliation can call the library and connect to the department director mentioned in the article to see if you are elegible. Like trying to go backstage it's not open to the general public . So just be sure you've got a legit reason to be there, get approval and get an appt. This ain't rocket science kids.
"...which in unfair to those with valid reason to be there."
To be honest, keeping them there in the first place and making them restricted is unfair. There is absolutely no reason under the sun these can't be made available to the general public so EVERYONE can enjoy them. You don't have to be a "qualified researcher" to go to a show and pay your $100, but after they close you do? It's crap and everyone here knows it is.

in my devious nature, i have pondered the possibility of getting a copy of one of these tapes. i mean as bad as it sounds, who among us could honestly say they didn't wish they had a copy of a video of their favorite show? im sure, not many. how hard does the library make it to make an "illigatmate" copy? even just filming the screen with a camcorder? i don't mean to be illegal and "scandalous", and i would much rather (myself and) the rest of the world go to the theatre, but still who could turn down a change for owing a dvd of their favorite show, to be watched whenever you please? until i found out about this collection a few years ago, i was completly bummed that some of broadways gems had come and gone FOREVER... who hasn't felt that?
Well, it's impossible to just videotape the screen because they come by every 10 minutes or so and glare at you. Plus there really is no way to get things out of there. A few have leaked out over the years but that hasn't happend for a long time (at least that I know of). But by doing that, they're just asking for people to bootleg the stuff.
Matt_G can i sleep with you for your access card?
Absolutely. We'll work out the details later.
*What he doesn't know is I can bring someone with me! Shhhh. Don't tell him!*
I don't know WHAT you're talking about. Beeyatch, you hearin' things.
