Matt, I can understand why theater lovers might feel they should have the right to see their favorite shows. But it's not as simple as that.

1. Can you imagine the line of people waiting to see these tapes. The library would have to create a staff of people like a movie house to accomadate the hundreds of people that would want to view their favorite shows. The Lincoln is a library and not legally set up to operate as a public theater.

2.When you condsider all the people and legal rights and monies involoved in producing staged shows; producers, directors and even actors who "own" this material and the rights and royalties for every viewing...well its just not gonna happen unless all these details are addressed. The "rights" belong to the shows owners to do as they please. (That's why they clamp down on boots too. It happens,,,but not with the blessings of the theater. It really is piracy. Plus the quality is almost always lacking. Sure! I've got some that were "given" to me. But taping them is wrong and that's not the topic anyway.)

It's all about legal rights, business and money...like eveything else...fair or not. That's just my opinion on this.

No, I'm talking about making them available to the public for home viewing, not at the library. You said -

"When you condsider all the people and legal rights and monies involoved..."

Well, that can be revised with contracts and various things. Imagine Hollywood saying that once a film left the theatre it couldn't be put on video because of the rights involved. And they don't really clamp down that hard. I'm not naming names, but everyone knows directors/stars/producers/etc have them and comission them to be made. It's just how it is.

Oooh Marquise, why don't you give him a little petname that looks pretty but doesn't make any sense.

I'd suggest riñón, there's a tilde AND an accent!
And he never has to know...

then I guess I'm a little corn-fused, Matt. I thought this was about public viewing of the taped shows within the library. If that's the topic, my view on this is still the same. You will be hard pressed to get producers, directors or TPTB (the powers that be)to put a clause to "release to the general public for viewing" etc, etc) under most contracts on Broadway. The varibles and unforseen factors are just too complex.

Sure, there are special circumstances that allow for certain people to have recordings...but if we're both on the same page here about "the Lincoln allowing public viewing of Bd'w shows to the general audience"...it's not gonna happen.

And... Hollywood surely makes a bundle on residuals and royalties for releases of films beyond the box office. But Broadway is Broadway and live shows will usually be best appreciated and presented.... live! again, just my take on this.

Marquise, I'm betting that if Matt_G could get an access card of his very own, then so can you.

I'm talking about these tapes (which are broadcast quality) being released to the public for sale. Use the money for "theatre restoration" or use the money they would get to fund shows and keep ticket prices lower. I don't care if they use the cash to wipe their asses, these videos don't deserve to be locked up and reserved only for "qualified researchers". I'm not going to change my mind on this one. It's a selfish and greedy thing to do and until the day they are released I am going to advocate personal recordings of shows so that people who can not get to the theatre or who simply want to remember their favorite shows have a chance to see them.

Yes, Rath. I did have an actual reason to get a card there. Believe it or not, some of you don't know EVERYTHING I do in my life.

Alrighty then! Your idea is a good one,Matt,, but it's not that way for a lot of reasons. Sorry you got snubbed.

Just remeber that little red flashing light will get you tossed out of a theater quicker than you can say "jumpin' jack flash" !

psst... tell me where you live and I'll share my stash...just pullin your chain.

Oh, please. Every camcorder made after 1990 should have the option to turn off that red light!

(Did I just say that out loud?)

I used to work for the Library of Performing Arts. Let me tell you, if they ever try to deny me, I'm going to sue them. The majority of funding of those tapes is paid for by YOUR tax dollars.

Unlike shows recorded for distribution on DVD or presented on PBS, etc., most of the shows available at the NYPL have been recorded without commercial considerations---they are strictly historical documents, recorded for posterity, and there is no reason why they should be available to the public on a general basis whatsoever. The fact that they are available to theater professionals, scholars, educators, historians, and future generations is cause enough for celebration. Demanding more is selfish, greedy, and, thankfully, useless.

Have they updated the list of shows available in the library? From the link previously posted, I don't see, for instance, a full length version of Once on this Island.

And to be honest, I'm still confused with the policy of "restriction" and who is allowed to see videos and who is not.

I think there is definitely an audience for it. The legal nightmare is the reason why they aren't released to the public (on DVD, etc.) and likely never will be.

If you were working on all the legal clearances involved in just one of these archived shows... all it would take is one performer, or one person from the creative team to say "no," for whatever reason they choose, and it would kill the proposal. Sounds like fun, doesn't it?

God, they can't even get Bennett's estate to agree to let the Tony telecasts of "Dreamgirls" and "Chorus Line" show up on the "Broadway's Lost Treasures" DVDs. Imagine going back and starting a stack of release forms for some of these full productions in the archives.

It's just not realistic or practical... regardless of whether or not you support them being shown or sold to the public from an artistic sense.

T'ain't gonna happen.
