Lincoln Center library, theater on film and tape

I know there are a million threads on this, but I have specific questions, and the majority of the threads I even remember seeing are like "how do you get in?!"

Yes, I have a valid reason to watch something (a paper) and I have proof of that reason. I tried calling, because the website says you need an appointment, but I got a recording which told me that the only day they don't take walk-ins is Saturday. So which is true? Also, if I can go as a walk-in, do I need a regular NYPL card? Is there anything else I need to be allowed to view a tape? I have to be able to just go down there one day this week and watch it, so hopefully nothing I need requires a long process.

Emcee-- I just watched the original Broadway production of EQUUS on Thursday at the library as a walk in. You simply fill out a form, tell them specifically what you want to see and that's it. I didn't have to show a library card or a NYPL Access card.

If you are going to do a walk-in - I recommend you get there at 12:00 when the library opens. Because some videos are being converted to their new format, not everything in the library is currently available for viewing. I would call first and make sure that what you want is available.

Thanks a lot. They definitely have what I want to watch, I know someone who's seen it recently, but I'll call and check before I go. I can probably get there around 12:30; I hope that's early enough.

I wouldn't wait much after 12:30 - sometimes there are several people trying to get in and do walk ins - it can be a little competative! And yes be sure to have a good answer why you want to watch it - they ask questions.

I'd love to go. What shows do they have on tape? I know there are many but just some notible ones. The only one I know of is the '89 Sweeney revival.

If you go to the Lincoln Center library website - you can do a search by title and see what they have on videotape.

Would anybody mind sharing some things they have there? I know nearly every Broadway show is on tape from the 90s on, but are there any things from the 70s and 80s available to walk-ins? And what is a good reason? "I'm a researcher.", "I'm doing a paper."?

I recently popped my Drama Book Shop cherry and it really was like I died and went to heaven! It’s so hard to find a good theatre book in a regular book store with just one shelf half filled with rent bibles, but this was a new home I want to work there and get paid to spend my days in heaven! ahhhhh

I personally would just recommend making an appointment. If you called during regular hours and got the machine, chances are someone just missed the phone, and it will be picked up if you call right back. You just have to tell them what you want to watch, day, and they'll tell you if they have times available--you have to go through the shpeel on the phone and/or when you get there. You're supposed to obtain a special NYPL research card, and I'm usually asked to show mine, but I guess strictness in that can vary. If you have to get one, it's easy to get right there at the library.

I mean, I've just always made an appointment, never tried walk-in. To me it just seems more convenient to make an app't, know you're set and such, but if walking in is fairly simple and you prefer that, go for it I guess. Still, in terms of tape availability, it also helps to make an appointment because (someone correct me if I'm wrong) if someone else is watching the tape at the time you want to walk-in, it may be unavailable.

Again, I just think it's much more convenient to make an appointment, but to each his own.

Well, I called at like 5:40 and they closed at six today, so I assumed maybe they were just done answering the phones for the day, or something. They're closed Sunday and Monday and I NEED to watch it Tuesday, Wednesday at the absolute latest, so if I want to get down there as soon as they open (or close to it) on Tuesday, it doesn't make sense to call them and try to make an appointment at that point. I would have left a message, but the outgoing message specifically says not to leave messages about making appointments, so I didn't. I figure I'll just get an Access card when I get there, if I need one. I realize that it's smarter to make an appointment, but since I'm a procrastinator and now sort of pressed for time, that's no longer really an option I have to do it the hard way, I guess, play it by ear and hope for the best.

I just watched Side Show at TOFT yesterday. It was exciting, although I was really disappointed with the drab staging.

Maybe Side Show looked better live than on video. The look of the production was what I liked best about it.

They usually two viewings a day at TOFT, one at 12 and another at 3. If you go on Tuesday and they can't fit you in at 12, they might be able to fit you in at 3. Or you could call around 12 and try to make an appointment for 3.

If you get there much after 12:30, I think they might not allow you to view something till 3 even if they have places open, unless it's pretty short.

So if you want to watch something early on Tuesday, I'd get there at 12.
