I saw Lion King with the kids about 2 years ago and I remember having these complaints :
- lack of female roles. I was dying to hear a soprano singing voice. I think there was only one song for a solo soprano?
- "I Just Can't Wait to be King" was terrible. I suspect that this song is just way too hard for a kid to sing
Other than that, all the positive things I had heard from the show were true. I enjoyed it much more than I expected to.

story:
the day after I saw TLK my mom and I were having lunch at the Stardust Dinner. We were talking with the people next to us about how we saw TLK the night before. WhenI said I didn't like it all that much the lady gave me a funny look and was like "WHY?". When I told her she gave me a fake chuckle. Some people can't take others opinions.

RobbieJ-
Though the puppetry itself is not part of African culture, almost everything else about the show is (i.e. music, vocals, choreography & costumes)- which is why i believed you were implying that puppetry was an African technique.
I want to thank you for the info/insight! Not once did i give thought to the origins of the art of puppetry...makes me appreciate the puppetry of the show even more.
However - and i think you'll agree - that the original poster's intent surely was not to attack Balinese shadow puppets and traditional Indonesian puppet theatre.

You're right, crp. That was not the poster's intent. And I was perhaps a bit strong in my defense (residue from ANOTHER TLK v. RAGTIME thread).
One of the other reasons I'm so defensive is because of an experience I had in college. I took a class in Korean Mask folk drama and thought, at first, how silly and simplistic it was. I was shocked to find out just how powerful, moving and fun it could be, and since then, I've tried to be open to all cultures' forms of storytelling.
